It's already getting chilly out there. 🍂 Blue crab is in season now! I heard the meat yield is great and it's a good deal, perfect for crab stew, steamed crab, or spicy marinated crab.

Living in Gangwon-do, I ate snow crab basically every day, but since moving to Incheon I hadn't tried blue crab yet. With it being peak season, I did some furious searching and ended up here.

Let's get into the review.

Haemulmyeongga Donghae Haemultang on Bupyeongmunhwa-ro: sign and interior

Haemulmyeongga Donghae Haemultang is at 108 Bupyeongmunhwa-ro, Bupyeong-gu, Incheon. I came in the evening and the sign was so flashy — kind of gives off an adult nightclub vibe lol. Or maybe a Wolmido feel?! I'm actually really into this vibe~ 😊👍💕

The inside was really, really spacious. There were quite a few customers even on a weekday!

What we ordered at Donghae Haemultang: seasonal steamed blue crab

We ordered steamed crab (kkotgejjim) 🦀😊 This place is known in Bupyeong for its seafood stew and monkfish dish, so I'm planning to try the monkfish next time. Live octopus was tempting too... but I held back this time!

With the Incheon Eeum Card you get an on-site 3% discount!! Incheon residents, run to this place~~!! Such a nice shop 😊❤️ It's also apparently been on TV quite a lot? Something about Lee Yi-kyung's discharge?

🚗 Oh, and parking is valet. The owner does it himself. Right out on the street (?)

What side dishes come with the steamed blue crab?

We'd pre-ordered, so everything was already set out when we arrived. The owner was worried the ice might have melted and made things taste off since we came a bit late.

Generously spread side dishes on the table

Whoa, so generous... my expectations are rising! The side dish spread was totally my style too!

There was soy sauce shrimp, and a savory fried jeon (totally my style). Dongchimi broth is always a win, and the acorn jelly was seasoned really nicely. Man…👍👍

Plate of savory fried jeon side dish

I ate this jeon all by myself lol. Spicy steamed crab paired with greasy jeon — what a combo..!

Bowl of sweet corn side dish

Sweet corn is a must! Wherever I go, if this is on the table I always eat it. Goes great with a shot of soju… (which ended up being a whole bottle)

Fried rice instead of a bowl of plain rice

I thought about ordering plain rice, but I personally believe fried rice is the true foundation of a meal. Plain rice is everywhere, but places that serve good fried rice are limited. Ahem (logical, right?)

Our table was too full, so they mixed the fried rice at the table right next to us. The smell was so savory my mouth was watering. (Hurry up please, ma'am)

How much meat is in the crab, and how spicy is it?

I started with the jeon I wanted most, getting ready to greet the steamed crab. And whoa, wow!

Honestly, as someone loyal to snow crab my whole life, my old thinking was: what's there to eat in blue crab? Just hard shell, nothing to pick at unlike soy-marinated crab, so why bother? That was my mindset going in.

But can you see this yield?! Being peak season, the meat was packed full. So much flesh. And it was tender enough to chew through easily.

The seasoning was so tasty, and the bean sprouts were great too. This isn't a dish for couples who are dating, honestly. I got so absorbed eating that sauce ended up smeared all over my face lol.

It was seriously, seriously good

Seasoned crab meat with bean sprouts

Taking a bite of bean sprouts together with the crab meat (the sauce was so good), the spice level — I can't handle anything spicier than Shin Ramyun, and this was just slightly spicier than Shin Ramyun, so I had to pause between bites, but it was enjoyable without being painful?!

A plate of spicy seasoned steamed crab

We scraped up every bit of the fried rice topped with seaweed flakes. Fried rice is always right… Caught up in the moment with sauce smeared all over our faces, the two of us just kept eating with our heads down, and before we knew it, everything was gone.

They even thoughtfully provided dental floss lol. In Bupyeong, Incheon, known for monkfish stew, seafood stew, and steamed seafood, plus steamed crab and crab stew —

That's the place! If you're craving seasonal crab, I recommend this spot!
