Ulsan Korean restaurant for tofu stew and summer bibimbap

There are so many great-value places to eat around the back gate of Ulsan University that, when you are looking for a meal, the long-loved restaurants students frequent really catch your eye. Today I visited Jeontong Sigol Chueotang Ulsan Mugeo Branch, known as a local favorite in Mugeo-dong, Ulsan, and a well-known spot near Ulsan University.

It specializes in chueotang (loach soup), but it also has plenty of comforting one-meal options, including duruchigi (spicy stir-fried meat), kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), braised tofu, and bibimbap. It is more than enough for a generous, home-style table when you are looking for somewhere to eat by Ulsan University's back gate.

Best of all, while there are so many clean, polished restaurants these days, Jeontong Sigol Chueotang really does have the warm atmosphere of a traditional country diner, just as its name suggests. That made the meal feel even more relaxing.

Two cars can park in front, and it is about two minutes from Ulsan University's back gate, so it is in a great spot for students coming for a meal.

If you are taking public transit, get off at Ulsan University's back gate and walk straight between Seven Eleven and Cloud Coffee. If you are driving, roughly two cars can park in front of the restaurant. You can also use Ulsan University parking: it is said to cost ₩1,000 for the first 30 minutes, then ₩300 per additional 10 minutes.

Even the name Jeontong Sigol Chueotang feels warm and familiar, doesn't it? It is a humble, cozy restaurant where neighborhood people have comfortably come to eat. It is not a lavishly decorated space, but that is exactly why it feels like the kind of place where you can walk in without a fuss, have a hearty bowl of rice, and head out satisfied.

It is close to Ulsan University's back gate, so lots of students come here to eat; it also feels like the kind of good-value place Mugeo-dong residents would use often.

Most of all, the restaurant's signature chueotang uses domestic loaches, boiled in-house from the morning and strained to remove the bones, so I think it would be an easy starter version even for first-timers. They say they make the chueotang themselves every other day, so loach-soup fans should definitely try the signature dish. I am planning to come back for it next time too, haha.

Beef tofu stew with deeply absorbed seasoning

The dish I ordered was the beef tofu stew.

Braised tofu is easy to think of as a side dish, but at Jeontong Sigol Chueotang it is substantial enough for a full meal, so it was perfect with rice. It honestly looked as if it contained two whole blocks of tofu—the portion was so generous—and the braising sauce was incredible.

Jeontong Sigol Chueotang is apparently also known for generous portions. Taste matters at a restaurant, of course, but that satisfied feeling of thinking, “I had a good meal,” matters too. As a spot near Ulsan University's back gate that students often visit, its strength is that you can eat heartily at a comfortable price. Nearby students really do come often, so there must be a reason it has been loved here for so long.

The seasoning had even soaked right into the tofu, so placing one piece over rice made it go down so easily. There was beef tucked in here and there too, which made it feel more abundant than tofu alone. The combination of tofu and savory beef was so delicious!

Rather than a loud, overworked flavor, this beef tofu stew had that familiar, comforting taste that reminds you of eating at home—yet it was wonderfully delicious. It was the best braised tofu I have had recently.

Yeolmu bibimbap, perfect for summer

The other dish we ordered was yeolmu bibimbap (rice mixed with young radish greens)!

In hot weather like this, there are days when you crave something cool and crisp rather than hot broth, right? That is when yeolmu bibimbap is just perfect. Mix the crunchy yeolmu with rice and it feels like you could finish a bowl in no time, even when you have no appetite.

It was exactly what good yeolmu bibimbap should be, and the fried egg on top was freshly cooked as well, with an especially rich nuttiness.

Looking over Jeontong Sigol Chueotang's menu, I also liked that it has lots of lighter one-meal choices such as kalguksu and bibimbap. With such a varied menu, it seems like a great diner to visit anytime you are wondering, “What should I eat today?” near Ulsan University's back gate.
