Hongdae brunch spot for daytime Kozel Dark and steak: Hôtel de Couture

In short

Hôtel de Couture is a Western-style brunch restaurant in a Yeonnam-dong alley in Mapo, Seoul, about a 10-minute walk from Exit 3 of Hongik University Station. After a ring-making workshop date nearby, the writer stopped in for lunch and ordered a Kozel Dark beer, the house steak and the jambon cream risotto; the steak arrived slightly overcooked because no one asked how it should be done. If you order steak at Hôtel de Couture, state your preferred doneness when ordering, and mix the egg yolk through the cream risotto.

After a ring-making date in Yeonnam-dong, we headed to lunch at Hôtel de Couture, a Yeonnam-dong favorite. I'd been craving proper Western food and found this place had over 5,700 Naver reviews, which made me curious. Visiting in person, the menu ranged from pasta to risotto to steak, and the atmosphere was great too — it would suit anyone looking for a spot for a Yeonnam-dong date course. It's also close to Hongik University Station, so it's easy to wander Yeonnam-dong or stop by a café afterward, making it a solid addition to a Hongdae date course.

Overall, with all the props and decorations arranged around, the first impression was more busy than clean, but the tables were spaced comfortably, making it a fine atmosphere for a small group visit.

What we ordered: Kozel Dark beer, orange juice, jambon (ham) cream risotto scented with truffle oil, and a house steak with a strong meaty aroma.

Kozel Dark with the house steak: ask for your doneness up front

The dishes we ordered started arriving one by one. With the jambon cream risotto and house steak placed together on the table, it looked quite generous right from the start.

Kozel Dark beer with a foamy head

It was lunch, but since it was a day off and I wanted to take it easy, I ordered a Kozel Dark. It has a signature soft foam, and paired with the meat dish, its slight bitterness cut through the richness nicely.

House steak served with fried onions and fries

The steak had a fairly strong meaty aroma from the first bite. The outside came out slightly crisp, and it was served with fried onions and fries. But the house steak had one letdown — no one asked how I wanted it cooked! So for my taste, it felt a bit overcooked.

A sliced piece of house steak showing the doneness

Since the texture of steak really depends on doneness, if you have a preference like medium or medium-rare, it's best to say so when ordering!

A piece of steak topped with wholegrain mustard

Eating the house steak with wholegrain mustard was a nice touch — the mustard's sharp bite cut through the meat's richness and made it a bit lighter to enjoy.

Truffle cream risotto topped with jambon and egg yolk

Jambon cream risotto: break the yolk and mix it through

My favorite dish was the jambon cream risotto scented with truffle oil! The soft cream sauce had a hint of truffle aroma with salty jambon on top — the truffle wasn't overpowering, and the savory, subtly spicy cream sauce paired well with the jambon's saltiness.

A spoonful of jambon cream risotto mixed with egg yolk

The rice in the risotto wasn't overcooked to mush either — it kept just enough bite, so each chew had a little pop along with a nutty flavor. Eating the jambon with the risotto is good on its own, but breaking the yolk on top and mixing it in makes it even smoother. If you like cream risotto, this one's recommended!
