Katsu combo set with kimchi cheese nabe near Gangwon Univ., Chuncheon
In short
Jeongseong Katsu Chuncheon Hyoja Branch is a tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) and Japanese-style restaurant a 3-minute walk from Gangwon National University's back gate in Chuncheon. The writer ordered the Jeongseong Mixed Katsu Set (₩13,000) with hirekatsu, rosukatsu, and fried shrimp, plus kimchi cheese nabe (₩13,000) mixed with rice. The hirekatsu stayed juicy and tender, and the cheese mellowed the nabe's spice enough to bring a kid along comfortably.

I went to eat tonkatsu near Gangwon National University. Thick, tender hirekatsu and savory rosukatsu, plus a spicy kimchi nabe on the side made for a filling meal. Here's my honest review.

Atmosphere and seating
The interior was clean overall, with the casual, comfortable vibe you'd expect near a university.

There were plenty of tables, so it seemed like a good spot to visit with friends,

or as a group, and it also felt like a comfortable place for solo diners without any pressure.

Baby chairs were also available, so it looked fine to visit with a kid too. The restroom is inside the restaurant, which is convenient, and there's a separate sink on one side that's great for washing your hands before and after eating.

Table-order ordering and the photo review event
I ordered through the table-order system. There was a Naver photo review event running, where the perks grow bigger with more participation, so I joined in :)

From tonkatsu to noodles and rice bowls, there was a good range to choose from depending on your mood. And being near a university, the prices were really reasonable too.

I ordered two dishes: the Jeongseong Mixed Katsu Set (₩13,000) and the Kimchi Cheese Nabe (₩13,000).
How does the hirekatsu and rosukatsu taste in the Jeongseong Mixed Katsu Set?

The set came with rosukatsu, hirekatsu, fried shrimp, yogurt salad, miso soup, and rice — a satisfying full meal. I wondered why there were two sauces, but it turned out the one in the bowl was Japanese-style curry haha. Great for dipping the katsu in, and later mixing into the rice for curry rice.

The pink-tinted tenderloin looked soft just by sight, so my chopsticks went there first.

One bite in, the juices were moist and it wasn't dry at all — very tender.

It had a clean flavor, so even with just a bit of salt, or dipped in wasabi, it was delicious without any greasiness. The loin cutlet also had a crispy coating and a nutty, flavorful taste that I really enjoyed.
How spicy is the kimchi cheese nabe?

The kimchi nabe, with cheese piled generously on top of the red broth, came with rice. The portion was hearty, so it already felt filling before I even started eating.
As the cheese melted, it stretched out in long pulls — the visual was absolutely wild!!

With the rich cheese mixed into the kimchi nabe broth, the spiciness mellowed out and it went really well with rice.
There was a spicy kick, but it wasn't too hot — even someone sensitive to spice, or a kid, could enjoy it.

The meat was so thick that just the tonkatsu alone was filling, but mixing rice into the kimchi nabe on top of that left me completely stuffed.
The sasami katsu from the review event

I also tried the sasami katsu I got for participating in the review event.

Since it's chicken tenderloin, I thought it might be dry, but it was surprisingly tender. The sauce had a light wasabi flavor, so it was tasty without any heaviness.

Who should you go with?
With such a varied and clean menu, this feels like a place that works no matter who you're with or when you visit — I'd recommend it if you're looking for tonkatsu near Gangwon National University. It's more than enough for a family meal or a date near Hyoja-dong in Chuncheon, and I'd strongly recommend it as a go-to restaurant in Hyoja-dong.
