Hunting for kongguksu in Ilsan, ending up at Auseong Gaeseong Sonmandu

September 6 was the day of Lim Young-woong's concert at Goyang Stadium. I'd actually been searching for a good kongguksu (cold soy milk noodle soup) spot in the area when I found 'Auseong Gaeseong Sonmandu,' but when I got there it was especially packed that day. Turned out the fan club members coming for the concert had timed their meals to stop by.

Inside and outside the restaurant, and the kitchen where dumplings are folded by hand

The first thing that caught my eye as I walked in was a staff member pinching dumplings by hand, one by one, right in front of the kitchen.

Seeing them hand-shaped right in front of me, rather than machine-pressed, already got my expectations up before I'd even ordered. The thick, rustic shape of the hand dumplings clearly showed how much care went into them.

The tables were spaced out generously so moving around was easy, and each table had its own burner set up so you could cook a hotpot right at your seat.

After watching the dumplings being hand-pinched right when I walked in, there was no way I could leave without eating some, haha. Luckily there was a set menu combining cold noodles and hand dumplings for ₩12,000, so I ordered that right away. The dumplings had that heavy, clean flavor typical of hand-made mandu, and they were so packed with filling that one bite left me really full.

Samgyeopsal (grilled pork belly), 17,000 won

Honestly I'd planned to just have the noodles and dumplings and leave, but watching the dumplings being made made me hungrier. So I ended up ordering samgyeopsal on top, and it turned out to be surprisingly good.

I wasn't expecting much, but the meat itself had good thickness and a subtle smoky char that made it really satisfying. If you're only planning to get dumplings, I'd recommend ordering the samgyeopsal too.

What the restaurant is like on a Lim Young-woong concert day

The place was especially crowded that day, and it turned out many of the fan club members heading to Lim Young-woong's concert were stopping in for a meal first.

A lot of people were filling up comfortably before heading to the concert, which gave me the impression this is a good place to stop near Goyang Stadium before or after a show.

If you're heading to the concert, I'd recommend checking parking ahead of time. Goyang Stadium has fewer than 2,000 parking spaces, and on big concert days those fill up fast, making it hard to find a spot.

It was a day where I set out looking for a good Ilsan restaurant and ended up unexpectedly enjoying great samgyeopsal too. Watching the dumplings hand-pinched was impressive, and both the dumplings and the samgyeopsal made for a satisfying meal. If you're looking for a place to eat near Goyang Stadium on a concert or event day, I'd recommend Auseong Gaeseong Sonmandu.
