Hanam braised pollock restaurant, 3:30pm family visit: Appa Jjim
In short
Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch is a steam-braising restaurant in Deokpung-dong, Hanam, Gyeonggi, where dishes are cooked with high-heat steam over maekbansaek (roasting stone). Arriving with family at the off-peak hour of 3:30pm, the writer ordered the small braised pollock with extra siraegi (dried radish greens), suhyangmi pot rice, a seafood pancake, and pork cutlet and fried shrimp for the child. The braised pollock was so generous that half the seafood pancake went home as a late-night snack.

After a brutal summer I'd totally lost my appetite, and what I craved was proper, spicy Korean food. Trying to figure out where to go to get my runaway appetite back, I ended up at 'Appa Jjim Main Branch,' a place that's been all over word-of-mouth as a Deokpung-dong, Hanam spot. I heard people line up here at lunchtime, so I rounded up the whole family and headed out excitedly ✌️

Even at an awkward 3:30pm, there were plenty of customers and a steady stream of delivery orders coming in. Proof it's the real deal?!!!
Where is Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch, and is there parking?
Appa Jjim Main Branch is in Deokpung-dong, Hanam, and there's a large dedicated parking lot right in front of the store. When you're driving with a kid, a cramped, chaotic parking lot can drain your energy before you even walk in. But parking here was genuinely easy!
It's also close to Pungsan-dong, Deokpung-dong, Misa Sculling & Rowing Park, and Starfield Hanam, so it's perfectly positioned for a weekend family outing or a drive-out destination 🚗

How does the 180°C maekbansaek steam cooking taste?
Reading the store's signage, Appa Jjim is apparently the original braising specialist using maekbansaek (roasting stone) high-heat steam at 180°C! Clearly because it's cooked through with 180°C high-heat steam, the seasoning soaks deep into the flesh, and the umami — not harsh at all, just clinging to your mouth — was insane... 😭❤️
It's a healthy, carefully made flavor that anyone, any age, can enjoy without complaint, and I instantly understood why it's beloved as a family gathering spot! We showed up starving and waited eagerly for the food. Side dishes came out first~

Today's order: braised pollock with dried radish greens + pot rice + seafood pancake + fried shrimp and pork cutlet!
Is Appa Jjim good with kids? Pork cutlet and fried shrimp

Appa Jjim Main Branch has a separate pork cutlet and crispy fried shrimp menu just for kids. It's awkward when the adults come for spicy braised pollock and there's nothing for the kid to eat, so this was such a relief! (Honestly I was craving the kids' kalguksu myself,,)
My kid happily devoured the crispy pork cutlet with a side of fried shrimp, which let the adults focus on our own meal in peace — truly a lifesaver of a restaurant for families with kids 👍

Small braised pollock plus extra siraegi — and they debone the fish for you

We ordered the small (小) braised pollock with added dried radish greens, plus freshly made pot rice! As soon as the food arrived, a staff member deboned it for us right away to make it easier to eat — I was touched!
Inside the braise, besides the big chunks of pollock, there were also rice cakes, radish, and tofu all soaked in sauce, so it was genuinely fun picking through and trying everything.

The kicker of this dish is the siraegi (dried radish greens) I added! It was so well braised that it wasn't tough at all — soft, with the seasoning soaked all the way through, and eaten together with the pollock flesh it's honestly the real deal 😭

Dolgim (crispy roasted seaweed sheet) + bean sprout combo: putting rice on the crispy dolgim provided alongside, then piling on the spicy pollock, siraegi, and crunchy bean sprouts for one big wrap — insane combo! I'd lost my appetite lately, but I ate wrap after wrap like it never happened.

Spice level: we ordered at the default spice, and it was a pleasantly mild kick of heat that cut through the richness and suited our palate perfectly!
Suhyangmi pot rice and the sungnyung finish

The moment the pot rice lid opened, a savory, subtle aroma wafted out — turns out they recently switched to a premium 'suhyangmi' rice, known for its faint sweet scent and excellent stickiness. The rice itself was glossy and chewy, and mixed with the spicy pollock sauce it disappeared in no time.
At the end, they finish it off with sungnyung made by pouring hot water over the scorched rice at the bottom of the pot — hearty and cleansing to close out the meal.
Too much seafood pancake, so we packed half to go
My husband was already full but spotted this on the menu and insisted we had to get it — seafood pancake! It came out golden brown and thick, packed generously with seafood and scallions. Crispy and so savory and delicious,

but because the braised pollock portion itself was so generous, half the pancake was left over — such a shame to waste 😭 Luckily they packed it up neatly, so we brought it home and warmed it up as a late-night snack ㅎㅎ

Final verdict on Appa Jjim Hanam Main Branch
A day where I got to feel firsthand why so many people line up for this Deokpung-dong, Hanam spot! The umami braised pollock cooked with 180°C high-heat steam, the perfectly braised siraegi, the chewy suhyangmi pot rice, plus a kids' menu and dedicated parking — everything about this family meal was perfect.
If you're trying to get your lost appetite back or looking for a weekend family gathering spot, I strongly, strongly recommend 'Appa Jjim Main Branch' ✌️
