Gangnam café open until 10pm for nunette financier: Upper and Under

In short

Upper and Under is a large dessert café spread over floors 1 to 3, a 5–6 minute walk from Exit 6 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul. After dinner on a weekday evening we ordered an Americano and an Einspänner with Earl Grey grapefruit cake, Earl Grey canelé and a nunette financier, then looked around every floor up to the 3rd-floor outdoor terrace. Since Upper and Under stays open until 10pm every day, it is an easy Gangnam café for a long late-evening conversation.

Looking for a nice café to grab dinner and talk with my boyfriend after work on a weekday, I found a big, atmospheric three-story café near Sinnonhyeon Station 🫪 It was a bit late already, but Upper and Under is open every day until 10pm, so we headed straight there haha

How to get to Upper and Under from Sinnonhyeon Station, and where to park

Upper and Under doesn't have its own parking lot — you can use Yeoksam Culture Park Public Parking Lot No. 2, a 6-minute walk away. Rates are ₩300 per 5 minutes, ₩1,800 for 30 minutes, ₩3,600 for 60 minutes.

  • ₩300 per 5 minutes
  • ₩1,800 per 30 minutes
  • ₩3,600 per 60 minutes

(For Gangnam, that's actually pretty cheap!!) And watch out for the insane slope walking back to the parking lot... lol, it basically digests your dinner for you 🥹

🐢 If you're coming on foot, it's a 5–6 minute walk from Sinnonhyeon Station Exit 6, just FYI!

The big tree at the entrance and the exterior of Upper and Under

Front facade of the Upper and Under building spanning floors 1–3

The café's front facade spans three floors. It looks great even from street level 😁

Large tree along the path up to the 2nd floor

There was a huge tree right where you head up to the 2nd floor, and it gave the place great atmosphere. I personally loved that they kept the tree intact instead of removing it, letting it grow alongside the building. 😊

What the 1st-floor seating at Upper and Under feels like

Spacious, cozy table seating on the 1st floor

The 1st floor was spacious and cozy, with a nice atmosphere. There were table seats tucked into every corner. (I snapped this quickly before leaving once we'd finished our drinks and there were no other customers around ✌️)

Table seat toward the back of the 1st floor

We first grabbed a table in the back here and decided to explore the other floors haha. There's no interior staircase on the 1st floor, so to get to the 2nd floor you have to go outside and use the exterior stairs. We also used the outside stairs to bring our drinks back down.

Ordering at the 2nd-floor counter and bakery case

2nd-floor space with counter and bakery case

The interior had a clean white tone with table seating extending all the way to the back, but every seat was taken so I only managed to snap this much haha. The counter and bakery are both on the 2nd floor, so that's where you order.

The airy 3rd floor and the outdoor terrace

Open, high-ceilinged space on the 3rd floor

Once you climb the stairs, you're greeted by an open space with high ceilings, which felt really airy. The 3rd floor also had bright brick and white tones, making the interior feel super bright lol

There's a door at the back that leads out to the outdoor terrace, and once you step through, there's a row of table seats. There was a nice breeze today, and I saw quite a few people sitting at the outdoor tables.

What we ordered at Upper and Under, and the menu prices

Dessert corner with financiers and canelés

Even though it was late evening, there was still a nice little variety of cakes and baked goods left, and they looked pretty. Today I decided I'd "eat for my boyfriend's sake" lol. We said let's each pick one, and went with Earl Grey grapefruit (₩8,500), Earl Grey canelé (₩4,500), and nunette financier (₩4,200)!

The menu board. My boyfriend said he wanted something to go with the desserts and picked an Americano (₩6,500), while I went for the Einspänner (₩8,000) from the signature cream latte section.

Sign explaining the receipt review event

There's a receipt review event where you get a free financier, but it's first-come, first-served for 10 teams a day, so if you're interested, move fast haha

2nd-floor outdoor seating lit up in the evening

While we were wandering around each floor, our buzzer went off, so we rushed to grab our order haha. Before heading back down to the 1st floor, the vibe of the 2nd-floor outdoor seating was so nice I snapped a quick photo 😁

Back to our 1st-floor table haha

How the Americano and Einspänner tasted

Americano and dessert on a 1st-floor table
A cup of Americano with noticeable acidity

The Americano. Rich and clean with a nice acidity. My boyfriend said it was perfect paired with the desserts.

Einspänner topped with cream

The Einspänner. Dense, sweet cream on top of a latte with acidity underneath. The acidity was there, but paired with the cream it wasn't really noticeable, so it wasn't overwhelming at all — I liked that! Subtly sweet and delicious. 😋

Earl Grey grapefruit cake, Earl Grey canelé and nunette financier

Earl Grey canelé and nunette financier

The Earl Grey grapefruit. A cake with Earl Grey–flavored sponge, piled high with sweet cream, and topped with grapefruit segments. Take a bite and the Earl Grey aroma spreads through your mouth along with the sweet cream, and then the bittersweet, refreshing grapefruit hits — the combination worked really well.

The Earl Grey canelé / nunette financier. The sweet, chewy canelé was packed with Earl Grey cream inside. The nunette financier is a long, stretched-out financier made to look like nunette (a Korean layered wafer-cream snack) — the outside was crisp and sweet just like real nunette, and the financier texture made it delicious. The top especially is crispy and sweet, so you basically have to eat it with an Americano lol.

Is Upper and Under worth a late-night visit in Gangnam?

This big three-story café had such a nice vibe, and with outdoor tables too, you could sit wherever you liked and just enjoy the time. Especially that huge tree at the entrance suited the café so perfectly — I want to come back during the daytime sometime for a different feel haha.

There was a good variety of desserts, and even though we were full from dinner and only tried a bite of each, they were genuinely tasty! My boyfriend cleaned up the rest lol. The coffee was sweet and delicious too, and it totally washed away the day's fatigue after work ~ 🤭 If you like a café with great atmosphere, delicious coffee, and pretty desserts, I recommend Upper and Under as your Sinnonhyeon Station café!
