Jeju Dongmun Market yuzu and gamtae oranda tried at our stay

In short

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a shop inside Jeju's Dongmun Market selling handmade oranda (Korean rice puff candy) and traditional gwajul snacks, with tastings available. On the first evening of a Jeju trip with a baby, the writer picked up yuzu oranda, gamtae (seaweed) oranda, and the signature rice-puff gwajul—12 pieces for ₩10,000—and tried them straight at the accommodation. The oranda turned out moist, crisp and chewy rather than hard, making it a spot worth buying extra of as a gift.

Day one of a Jeju trip with a baby, discovered at Dongmun Market

Day one of a Jeju trip with a baby🌴 Before heading to our accommodation after landing in Jeju, we stopped by Dongmun Market for dinner and snacks. While wandering around looking at everything, a savory smell pulled us in — and that's how we found Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong.

I'm sharing this for anyone looking for a Dongmun Market gift for family or friends too!✨

It's in a great spot to stop by while browsing Dongmun Market. Easy to find too, thanks to the big orange "Cheongchuni Oranda" sign🧡

Gift sets and generously filled bags

The cute oranda gift sets caught my eye as soon as I walked in🎁 Some sets have individually wrapped pieces of oranda, which seemed great for handing out to family or friends. And even if it's not for gifting, there are big bags packed generously with oranda too, good for snacking at the stay😋

So many kinds of oranda

I walked in expecting just plain oranda, but the variety was genuinely surprising. Yuzu, gamtae, nut, and more! I'd always thought of oranda as hard and sticking to your teeth, but the texture here was totally different from what I expected!! Moist, crisp, and chewy all at once✨

They come in small individual packs, so it's easy to buy a few of each kind! The yuzu oranda especially, with its subtle citrus scent spreading through your mouth, was my favorite out of everything I tried🍊💛 The nut oranda is piled with nuts on top for an even nuttier bite!

Donut oranda🍩 With colorful toppings on top, it really looks like a donut from a distance. Turning a traditional snack into this — kids would probably love getting these as a gift too.

Jeju's traditional gwajul, also in several types

They also sell Jeju's traditional gwajul (rice puff confection) snack, and not just one kind either —

  • ✔️ White rice gwajul
  • ✔️ Brown rice gwajul
  • ✔️ Buckwheat gwajul
  • ✔️ Steamed rice gwajul

— several types were all lined up and ready.

The signature rice-puff gwajul is 12 pieces for ₩10,000💰 Each bag is packed generously, so it's good for sharing with family at the stay during the trip, and light enough to bring home as a snack too.

When we happened to visit, a staff member was busy making gwajul right there in the shop.

You can taste before you buy

And the great thing — tastings are available!! They've set out samples so you can try each type of oranda and gwajul😋 With so many options, I was stuck on what to buy, but the staff kindly explained each one so you can taste and pick whatever suits you.

For snacks at the stay, I bought oranda, the signature rice-puff gwajul, and gamtae oranda. The bag was seriously packed full!👍🏻

Yuzu and gamtae oranda, tried right at the stay

The moment we got to the stay I couldn't wait and pulled it all out! Time to dig in

Bite-sized pieces of yuzu oranda opened at the stay

First, the yuzu oranda! It's already cut into bite-sized pieces, so no need to cut it yourself — a nice bonus. It looks pretty firm from the outside, but it's actually softer than expected once you bite in.

Crisp + moist + chewy✨ There's a subtle yuzu scent, and it pairs so well with the sweet oranda...💛

Gamtae oranda with seaweed covering one side

Curious, I'd also bought gamtae oranda💚 Bright green gamtae (seaweed) covers one whole side of it haha. One bite in, and you get the distinctive gamtae aroma and salty flavor together with the sweet oranda — the combination was way better than I expected.

Sweet and salty, back and forth😋 Completely different from the plain oranda, so this one was great to eat as something special.

A bag of rice-puff gwajul! There are several types in one bag, so there's fun in picking which one to eat next🤎 As you can tell from the photo, each piece is quite large. One bite and it's crunchy!! Packed with grains, so it gets nuttier the more you chew. It's on the plain side, which actually suited my taste.

To sum up

Being able to taste the oranda and gwajul before buying, plus the variety from plain to distinctive flavors like yuzu and gamtae, made browsing fun too. Especially the oranda — moist and crisp rather than hard, which made it genuinely tasty. The gift sets are nicely put together too, so this seems like a good option for anyone looking for a Dongmun Market gift or Jeju souvenir🎁

I bought mine as a snack for the stay, but after trying it I wished I'd bought a few more for gifts! If you're browsing Dongmun Market and craving something sweet and nutty, stop by, try the tastings, and pick your own🫶🏻
