First impressions of a converted-warehouse café in Sunseong-myeon

Over the weekend, I took a drive to Dangjin in Chungnam to get some fresh air. As I drove along the road toward Sunseong-myeon, a simple sign caught my eye. It belonged to a place with the unusual name MIMI Coffee Mill (미미커피방앗간). The name alone made me intensely curious, so I turned the wheel without hesitation and stopped in.
At first glance, the exterior was a rough yet unpretentious building that looked as though it had once been a farm warehouse or an actual mill. I parked and walked toward the entrance, immediately sensing its distinctive, neighborly warmth. Unlike the flashy, polished large mood cafés so common in cities these days, it held onto the easygoing, cozy character of the area.

When I opened the door and stepped inside, a surprisingly spacious interior unfolded—something I hadn't expected from the exterior. The high ceiling, exposed structure, and warm orange lighting all came together beautifully.

Perhaps because it was converted from a warehouse, the ceiling was so high that it never felt stuffy, and the open airiness put me at ease. Neatly arranged, unfussy tables and charming little decorations welcomed visitors.
The coffee story behind this roastery café
While looking around, I learned an interesting fact. MIMI Coffee Mill is a roastery café run directly by the director of a Dangjin barista coffee academy. A professional with more than 20 years of experience operates a directly managed roasting factory and looks after the beans.
I was told that, to bring out the coffee's flavor at its best, they select and use only roasted beans aged for at least 120 hours and no more than 480 hours. That made me even more excited for the coffee. The careful checking and serving of the beans' condition revealed the café owner's deep affection and conviction.
One side of the shop displayed various awards, certificates, and gift items in tidy order. Rather than simply being a place that sells drinks, it felt like a specialist space adding depth to the local coffee culture. Just thinking of the coffee being carefully brewed had me excited before I had even ordered.
Ordering a MIMI Cream Latte and four desserts

After reading the menu closely, I ordered a good mix of drinks and desserts at the kiosk. I went for MIMI Coffee Mill's signature MIMI Cream Latte, a refreshing Americano, and a variety of desserts said to be must-tries here. Before long, everything arrived neatly arranged on a tray. Just looking at the drinks and desserts piled on it made my mouth water.

The signature MIMI Cream Latte and Americano
I started with the signature MIMI Cream Latte. Even the presentation caught my eye: the cup arrived nestled inside a flat, square wooden frame. A generous layer of nutty misutgaru (mixed-grain powder) cream, developed in-house, sat on top, lightly dusted with black sesame powder.
The moment I took a sip, the soft, sweet nuttiness of the misutgaru cream naturally blended with the deeply flavored espresso underneath. It was not overly sweet, yet its rich grainy nuttiness lingered on my tongue, making me want to keep scooping up the cream with a spoon.
The standard Americano also exceeded expectations. Perhaps because it used aged roasted beans, it was pleasantly bitter with a clean finish and just the right body. It was truly the ideal balance alongside the sweet desserts.
Desserts from soboro to glutinous rice and pea bread
Next, I tried the desserts that filled the table, one by one.

The Chodang Sweet Corn Mochi Soboro was as appealing as its sunny yellow appearance. Its crisp soboro crumb topping gave way to chewy mochi and little bursts of sweet Chodang corn flavor, making it fun to eat. The Peanut Butter Soboro filled my mouth with nutty peanut aroma and perfectly delivered that crisp-outside, moist-inside contrast.
The Glutinous Rice & Pea Bread had a delightfully chewy, rice-cake-like texture, and the pea paste worked beautifully with it, creating a refined flavor adults would enjoy too. Lastly, the Cinnamon Bread had distinct flaky layers, with fragrant cinnamon and nuts providing a nutty bite; it paired best with the Americano. Overall, the desserts were satisfying: not excessively sweet and clearly made with care.
An outdoor retreat with a grassy garden

After enjoying the drinks and desserts, I headed out to the back of the café and its outdoor area. This outdoor retreat was another of MIMI Coffee Mill's charms.
The outdoor garden, covered in lush green grass, had cute camping chairs and tables. Strings of warm globe lights hung overhead, and I imagined the atmosphere would feel even more romantic around sunset. A garland bore the friendly phrase, “Smile again today,” which naturally brought a small smile to my face.
Sitting outside and listening to the breeze, away from the stifling city, made me feel at ease. It was also an ideal setting for visiting with children or spending an unhurried time outdoors with a pet. Being able to enjoy both the comfortable indoor space and the natural outdoor mood is a major advantage of this café.
