Aewol black pork restaurant, 5:30pm geun-gogi: Nopo Dwaeji Aewol
In short
Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is a black pork geun-gogi (thick-cut pork sold by the geun, about 600g) restaurant on Gwakji 9-gil in Aewol-eup, near Gwakji Beach on Jeju Island. Two diners arrived at 5:30pm, had the staff grill neck and belly geun-gogi at the table, dipped each piece in meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) simmered on the grill with garlic and chili, and finished with bibim hoe-naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles with raw fish). With a dedicated parking lot and a self-serve bar, Nopo Dwaeji Aewol is a solid pick for proper black pork in Aewol.

When you're in Jeju, black pork is a must-eat, and this particular spot had it all — atmosphere, side dishes, meat quality, and a satisfying finish. I really wanted to share it.
This is my honest review of 'Nopo Dwaeji,' where I got to enjoy real black pork geun-gogi (thick-cut pork by the geun) in a quiet, relaxed corner of Aewol, Jeju.
It's close to Gwakji Beach, so if you're heading there, I highly, highly recommend stopping by.

Parking and the room at Nopo Dwaeji Aewol
When you're hunting down Jeju restaurants, parking stress is a real thing sometimes, but Nopo Dwaeji has its own well-organized lot right behind the building, so we parked with zero hassle and walked straight in.

Once inside, instead of a crowded, noisy scene, we were greeted with a quiet, relaxed vibe, which was genuinely lovely.
It was the perfect setting for chatting comfortably over a meal.

Why we picked geun-gogi over the 600g single order
Maybe because lunch hadn't been much, we were starving, so we ordered the black pork geun-gogi the second we sat down haha. We debated whether to just get the 600g single order, but figured we'd end up adding more anyway, so we went all-in with the geun-gogi to really let loose eating haha. Zero regrets, I'll say that right now!!

We got there around 5:30pm, and it was nice and quiet — but by 6pm the place was completely full.

Looking outside, the stylish stone walls immediately told me I was at a real Jeju restaurant.

Side dishes and the house kick: Nopo Dwaeji Aewol's vegetable salad
Once we ordered, the side dishes came out quickly: pickled chili, savory radish strips, crunchy white kimchi, refreshing radish wrap, and three basic sauces to pair with the meat alongside melJeot (fermented anchovy sauce), black pork's classic partner.
But there was one real 'kick' unique to this place I have to mention — a vegetable salad of lettuce and cabbage tossed in a special seasoning sauce. The umami of that sauce was so strong that my chopsticks kept reaching for it even before the meat was grilled, haha.
It was that good — I was eating it constantly before the meat even hit the grill. Highly recommend eating it again and again!

The melJeot is seriously, seriously delicious, ugh.

What's on the self-serve bar
After checking out the basic spread, we headed straight to the self-serve bar to make sure we had everything for a full meal. It was kept spotless, and we grabbed plenty of garlic and chili to eat with the meat, plus fresh lettuce and perilla leaves.

Black pork geun-gogi grilled by the staff
Right as we ordered, thick, fresh black pork geun-gogi arrived like it had been waiting for us. The geun-gogi was a combination of juicy neck meat and savory belly.
What I loved most was that the staff carefully grilled the meat from start to finish. Thick geun-gogi can easily lose its juices if you grill it yourself, but with their expert touch, it came out crisp outside and juicy inside, cooked exactly right — all we had to do was sit back and pick it up as it was served to us.

How to eat the meljeot: simmer it with garlic and chili
Here's a tip I have to share!! If you dip the meat straight into the melJeot as soon as it's served, it can taste a bit fishy. So we took garlic and chili from the self-serve bar, sliced them up, loaded them into the melJeot, and boiled it right there on the grill.
Once the melJeot starts bubbling away on the grill like that, the fishy taste completely disappears, leaving only its deep, savory umami — and dipping the meat in it takes the flavor to a whole new level! Definitely try it this way if you visit.

Doesn't it look mouthwatering just from the photos, ugh. I already want to eat Nopo Dwaeji's black pork again...

Nopo Dwaeji's real charm was in a combination you never get tired of. The meat itself was excellent quality, and with three sauces, white kimchi, pickled chili, melJeot, and of course the vegetable salad all available to mix and match, we had so much fun trying different combinations and wraps. Everything was so good that the two of us wiped out that huge geun portion in no time!

Finishing with bibim hoe-naengmyeon
As we were finishing up the meat, we ordered 'bibim hoe-naengmyeon' (spicy cold noodles with raw pollack) for a clean finish. It came piled generously with tangy, well-seasoned, chewy raw pollack, and the noodles were springy with fantastic sauce flavor.
We wrapped a piece of black pork we'd saved into the spicy-sweet pollack noodles, and it perfectly cut through the greasiness for a great ending.
Is Nopo Dwaeji Aewol worth it?
From the easy parking lot behind the store, to the pleasant atmosphere, the friendly staff grilling the meat for us, the appetite-boosting special vegetable salad, and the savory bibim hoe-naengmyeon with pollack — the two of us left this meal fully satisfied.
If you're looking for a proper black pork geun-gogi restaurant in Aewol, Jeju, I strongly recommend giving 'Nopo Dwaeji' a visit! 😊
