Jeju Dongmun Market snack shop: one bag each of nut oranda and gwajul

In short

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a traditional Jeju snack shop inside Dongmun Market in Jeju City, where oranda (soft rice-and-nut candy) and gwajul (crisp grain confection) are made by hand in the store. As the last stop of a Jeju trip, the writer tried the samples and bought one bag of nut oranda at around 10,000 won and one bag of gwajul at around 12,000 won, and liked the contrast between the soft, moist oranda and the crunchy gwajul. Cheongchuni Oranda is an easy Jeju souvenir to pick up at the end of a trip when you don't want to add weight to your luggage.

Dongmun Market is always my last stop on a Jeju trip. This time too, while wandering around looking for a Jeju Dongmun Market gift, one place caught my eye right away: Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong. Watching them make it fresh right in front of the shop, I couldn't just walk past.

I figured a lot of people struggle with what to buy as a Jeju Dongmun Market souvenir, so here's my visit review covering the location, prices, and how it actually tasted.

Where is Cheongchuni Oranda in Dongmun Market, and what are its hours?

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch is at 6-8 Dongmun-ro, 1st floor, Jeju-si, Jeju, and it's open 9:00–20:00. It's in a fairly easy-to-find spot even within the sprawling market, and entering through Gate 2 or Gate 9 of Dongmun Market gets you there quickly.

The market is so big with so many alleys that it's easy to get turned around on a first visit, but if you just remember the gate numbers, you won't have to wander. I actually walked in through the opposite gate once and had to loop way around to find it, but this time I looked it up beforehand and it was much smoother.

What is oranda? Watching it made by hand in the store

Oranda is a traditional Jeju snack made by frying rice or nuts and binding them with syrup. Cheongchuni Oranda uses its own handmade method, so instead of being hard, it's said to have a soft, moist texture.

You can actually watch staff making it by hand inside the shop, and since it's packaged and sold fresh right after being made, I felt confident about freshness. Watching the oranda-making process amid the market's lively atmosphere was fun in its own way. Best of all, samples were set out so I could taste before buying.

Oranda flavors and prices at Cheongchuni Oranda: yuzu and nut

Cheongchuni Oranda's lineup splits into two main flavors. Yuzu oranda fills your mouth with citrus aroma the moment you bite in, giving you a crisp yet moist texture at once. Nut oranda, true to its name, is packed with nuts, made to deliver nutrition along with flavor.

The oranda gift set is ₩20,000, and a single bag of oranda is about ₩10,000. The set is neat for gifting, while a single bag is plenty if you're eating alone or just want a light taste.

How the four gwajul types differ: white rice, brown rice, buckwheat, steamed rice

Right next to the oranda, gwajul was also on sale. Gwajul is a traditional Korean confection made from rice or grains, and Cheongchuni Oranda offers four kinds.

White rice gwajul has a crisp, sweet taste, while brown rice gwajul and buckwheat gwajul are both nutty and mild, relatively gentle to eat. Steamed rice gwajul falls into the same crisp-sweet category as the white rice one. If you prefer sweetness, go for white rice or steamed rice gwajul; if you prefer something plainer, brown rice or buckwheat gwajul would suit you.

A single packed bag of any gwajul type is about ₩12,000.

Taste test: one bag of nut oranda and one bag of gwajul

I was curious about everything, but since I was traveling and didn't want to carry a heavy load, I only picked up one bag each of nut oranda and gwajul. With the nut oranda, the first thing I noticed on biting in was the soft, moist texture — definitely different from the hard, crunchy candy-type snacks you usually think of.

The more I chewed, the more the nutty flavor spread subtly, and since it wasn't too sweet, I kept reaching for more. I also bought the gwajul, and its crisp texture with a hint of sweetness made for a fun contrast when eaten alongside the oranda. It was also perfect to share with family once I got home.

Totally recommend it as a Jeju souvenir gift!!

Where to park at Dongmun Market and what the public lot costs

If you're visiting by car, use the Dongmun Market public parking lot. The market itself doesn't have its own dedicated parking space, so the most straightforward option is to park at the public lot and walk in.

The first 30 minutes are free, and after that a base fee of ₩1,000 is charged, plus ₩500 for every 15 minutes. However, there's a daily maximum of ₩10,000, so even a long day of browsing the market won't send the fee climbing endlessly.

  • First 30 minutes free, then ₩1,000 base + ₩500 per 15 minutes
  • Daily maximum ₩10,000
  • Discounts may apply for people with disabilities, national merit recipients, light vehicles, EVs, etc. — check at payment if you qualify
  • Rates can be adjusted per city policy, so it's worth double-checking the on-site signage

Especially on weekends or in the evening, the market tends to get crowded, so it's better to arrive with some buffer time and secure a parking spot first.

Why Cheongchuni Oranda works as a last-stop Jeju souvenir

If you're wondering what to get as a Jeju Dongmun Market gift or souvenir, I'd recommend stopping by Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch. The biggest difference from other shops was the handmade oranda that's soft and moist instead of hard, and watching it being made in-store gave me even more confidence in it.

You can pick between yuzu oranda and nut oranda depending on your taste, and with gwajul ranging from white rice to buckwheat, there's enough variety to make a gift set that suits different people's preferences. I brought home one bag each of nut oranda and gwajul, and at such a reasonable price, it was a fully satisfying souvenir with plenty of Jeju feel.

If you're planning a visit to Dongmun Market, come in through Gate 2 or Gate 9 and look for it.
