Euljiro tteokbokki restaurant, sweat-level spicy combo: Hyeonseoni-ne
In short
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an old-school tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) restaurant in the alley next to Mega Coffee by exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a weekday visit at 7pm, there was a wait before the spicy Hyeonseoni-ne Combo (25,000 won) arrived: hotter than it looks, enough to break a sweat, but the kind of heat that keeps you eating, with chewy wheat rice cakes, sundae liver and tuna rice balls. Hyeonseoni-ne is worth the queue, though anyone spice-shy should order the mild version.

Today I'm introducing an Euljiro tteokbokki spot near my office that I finally revisited after way too long — Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch.
When was the last time I had tteokbokki that wasn't Yeoptteok 🧐 Anyway, it had genuinely been forever since I visited Hyeonseoni-ne, a spot I loved but somehow forgot about.
Where is Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, and when is it open?

They don't open at all on weekends — probably because Euljiro is packed with office workers on weekdays.
Finding Hyeonseoni-ne in the alley beside Mega Coffee

This Euljiro tteokbokki spot sits in an alley near exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station, but it's easy to miss at a glance haha. Right next to Mega Coffee!!!

Orders go through the kiosk set up outside.
How long is the wait at 7pm on a weekday?

I went around 7pm on a weekday and it was fully packed, so there was a short wait.

The interior of Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, packed with customers then quiet again as I finished eating and left. You get that full old-school diner feeling while eating great tteokbokki.

Utensils, water, pickled radish, bowls — all self-serve!
Hyeonseoni-ne menu and prices

The menu at this Euljiro tteokbokki spot includes the Hyeonseoni-ne Combo at ₩25,000, the Hyeonseoni-ne Set at ₩23,000, instant tteokbokki (for 2) at ₩22,000, and plain tteokbokki at ₩6,000. They also sell grown-up drinks haha 🍻 draft beer ₩4,500, soju ₩5,000.
Hyeonseoni-ne serves both instant-style tteokbokki and regular tteokbokki. I feel like I've had the instant version before… but in my memory, I actually preferred the plain tteokbokki.

There are some nostalgic menu items too haha.
What comes in the 25,000 won Hyeonseoni-ne Combo?

No question about what to order at this Euljiro tteokbokki spot — the Hyeonseoni-ne Combo, haha, ₩25,000. It comes with tteokbokki, sundae (Korean blood sausage), fried snacks, fish cake, and gimbap (seaweed rice roll), and you can choose the spice level of the tteokbokki. (They'd run out of gimbap that day, so I got tuna rice balls instead.) Carb, carb, carb, carb, carb bomb 🍚
How spicy is the spicy tteokbokki at Hyeonseoni-ne?

The spicy sauce didn't look that hot, but it was properly spicy — nothing like its appearance haha. Genuinely sweat-inducing spicy!!! But it's not mindlessly hot, it's a delicious kind of spicy, so my hand kept going back for more. My mouth is watering just writing this 🤤

The rice cakes are chewy wheat tteok, which makes it even better 😋
Fried snacks and sundae (Korean blood sausage)

The fried snacks include kimmari (seaweed-wrapped noodle rolls), sweet potato, squid, vegetable fritters, and flat mandu (dumplings). Savory and crispy — hard to stop eating.

The sundae comes mixed with glutinous sundae and organ meat — plenty of liver, which I love. Maybe I was a nine-tailed fox in a past life haha.
Tuna rice balls when the gimbap sells out

Since the gimbap in the Hyeonseoni-ne combo had sold out, I got tuna rice balls instead 🍙 There's no way these could be bad 😆 A bite of spicy tteokbokki, then a bite of tuna rice ball — great pairing.
Review event at Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch

Apparently if you leave a Naver Maps review, you can get a savory mayo rice ball or a nostalgic tteok-and-fried-snack combo.
Verdict on Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch
A one-line verdict on this Euljiro tteokbokki spot I'd somehow forgotten about all this time.
- The spicy version is hotter than Yeoptteok, so spice-shy eaters should go mild
- Personally, I like the plain tteokbokki better than the instant-style one
- They also sell alcohol, so it's great for a drink or two
- There's a line even in the evening, but the turnover is fast so it's no big deal
Why did I forget about this place for so long ㅠㅠㅠ I need to come back regularly.
