Looking for somewhere kid-friendly to eat in Geoje?

Bongga Gukbap, found near Geoje Botanical Garden, turned out to be an easy, comfortable meal during our family trip.

• The pork gukbap (rice and soup) was clean with no gaminess and a rich broth, and the boiled pork was tender enough for the kids to eat happily.
• Asking for the dadaegi to be left out of the kids' gukbap meant it wasn't spicy, which made it a solid choice for a family meal.
• Especially if your itinerary includes Geoje Botanical Garden and Bird & Fish, this is a Geoje restaurant worth considering for the route.

Why we chose Bongga Gukbap on a Geoje food trip

Bongga Gukbap is a gukbap restaurant in Geoje-myeon on the west side of Geoje, near Geoje Botanical Garden. This Geoje trip mostly centered on the middle of the island, with stops on the west and east sides too.

On the west side we visited Villa Gabae Pool Villa and Bird & Fish — Geoje Botanical Garden, which we'd been to before, is also nearby.

We tried to keep our route short while checking for kid-friendly menus and easy parking. It was windy and overcast that day, so we were craving something hot in broth and searched for a gukbap place.

It's on the west side of Geoje and close to Geoje Botanical Garden, so it works well as a meal before or after visiting the garden. Best of all, you can order gukbap and suyuk (boiled pork) together, so adults and kids could all eat well at the same table.

Inside Bongga Gukbap and where to park

Bongga Gukbap has parking space in front of the building, and the interior had a clean atmosphere.

A lot of locals were eating there — solo diners, people in work clothes, all sorts. The place had a clean feel, and apparently the owner paints, because there were quite a few paintings hanging on the walls.

Most of Bongga Gukbap's gukbap dishes are around ₩9,000. We ordered four items total: pork gukbap, sundae gukbap, and two suyuk dishes.

These are the four dishes we ordered. Most gukbap dishes are around ₩9,000, and we got pork gukbap and sundae gukbap. Being able to add a suyuk dish the kids like made it easy to put together a family-friendly order.

Suyuk-han-sang in particular is a set where gukbap and suyuk come together — great if you want both a bowl of soup and boiled pork in one order.

Mat-bogi-suyuk, on the other hand, is boiled pork only. The name made us think the portion would be small, but it was actually generous enough for several people to share.

Geoje pork gukbap: rich broth with no gamey smell

Bongga Gukbap's pork gukbap had almost no gaminess and tasted clean. The flavor is exactly why I'm recommending Bongga Gukbap as a Geoje restaurant.

Pork gukbap can be hit or miss because of its characteristic gaminess, but Bongga Gukbap's version had almost none of that — it tasted clean.

At the same time, the broth was clean yet rich, so even adults who usually avoid pork gukbap because of the smell could enjoy it here. And isn't the meat portion really generous too? 😀

Dadaegi (spicy chili paste) comes mixed into the gukbap by default, so if you're visiting with kids, be sure to ask for it to be left out when ordering. That way the kids can eat the gukbap without any spicy seasoning, fairly comfortably.

The sundae gukbap comes with chewy chapssal-sundae (sticky rice blood sausage). The base is the same as the pork gukbap.

This Geoje restaurant recommendation also gave us a generous amount of chives — plenty of chives really makes the dish.

Tender suyuk that works as a kids' dish too

Bongga Gukbap's suyuk (boiled pork) wasn't chewy at all — it was tender, and the kids ate it especially well.

This time, the suyuk was what the kids ate the most of. The meat wasn't chewy and was tender, which made it just right for them.

The adults ate the suyuk almost like a side dish, and the portion was enough for the kids to fill up on too. Traveling in Geoje with kids can make picking a restaurant tricky because of what they'll eat, but being able to order gukbap and suyuk together made the menu choice easy. If your kids especially like meat, adding one suyuk order for the family to share works well too.

Suyuk platter vs sample suyuk: what's the difference?

These two menu items can be a bit confusing. Suyuk-han-sang comes with gukbap and suyuk together, while mat-bogi-suyuk is suyuk only. If you want a bowl of gukbap plus suyuk, go with suyuk-han-sang. If you've already ordered several bowls of gukbap and just want to add suyuk, go with mat-bogi-suyuk.

At Bongga Gukbap, banchan (side dishes) are self-serve — you help yourself from the bar.

Whatever side dishes we needed during the meal, we could just grab from the self-serve bar.

Eating with kids often means going back for more banchan, so having a self-serve bar made it easy to grab as much as we needed. The kimchi in particular was really tasty! The cheongyang chili peppers had real heat too, which paired perfectly with the suyuk.
