Euljiro tteokbokki restaurant, too full for fried rice: Hyeonseoni-ne
In short
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is an old-school snack bar next to Starbucks by Exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. Instant tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes cooked at the table) for two costs 22,000 won, and adding fish cake brought hot broth for a chilly day, while jjolmyeon (chewy cold noodles), fried mandu, egg and cabbage toppings filled two people up before the fried rice finish. Even the medium of the three spice levels is quite hot at Hyeonseoni-ne, so pick level one if you are spice-sensitive and go as a group of three if you want the fried rice.

You know Hyeonseoni-ne's tteokbokki is already famous, right?? I was near Euljiro Station and spotted their Cheonggye Instant Branch, so I went straight in for instant tteokbokki (spicy stir-fried rice cake)!

Where is Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch, and when is it open?
Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch is at 112 Namdaemun-ro, 1st floor (next to Mega Coffee), Jung-gu, Seoul. Walk toward Exit 3 of Euljiro 1-ga Station and you'll see a Starbucks on your right!!! It's in the building right next door (right behind the shoe repair shop!)
- Hours: Mon–Fri 10:40–21:00
- Closed every Saturday and Sunday
- Reservations, takeout, and delivery available

You really have to squint to spot the Hyeonseoni-ne sign, haha. Since everything's in one spot, you order and pay up front before going in!

Old-school atmosphere: eating outside at Hyeonseoni-ne
They even had Pikachu-shaped pork cutlets, fried fish cake, and fried tteok — that kind of old-fashioned snack food, haha. What makes Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch special is that it's set up like an old-school joint — you know how most places nowadays are all indoor seating? Here you eat outside, which felt more like a pojangmacha (street food tent) and had that old-timey feel, so there were a lot of older customers too!

Instant tteokbokki for two with a fish cake add-on
We added fish cake to our instant tteokbokki! You know the fish cake mixed into the tteokbokki has a totally different texture from the plain curly fish cake, right? Drinking the fish cake broth alongside it is the best... it was a bit chilly that day, so the hot broth felt amazing, haha.

The instant tteokbokki finally arrived!!! Mandu, jjolmyeon (chewy cold noodles), egg, cabbage and fish cake toppings are just perfect><. While it's boiling, you can grab pickled radish from the self-serve bar.
You just wait for everything to cook through, and it doesn't take long at all?!! But when you're hungry, even those few minutes feel rough..ㅠㅠㅠㅠ

Three spice levels, and even medium is hot
I already want to eat it again ㅠㅠㅠㅠ Oh!! There are three spice levels, and even the medium one is pretty spicy, you know? If you're sensitive to spice, I'd definitely recommend ordering the mildest level.
The first thing we ate was the jjolmyeon... this jjolmyeon is genuinely delicious and the noodles soak up the broth so well, super chewy.

Next up, fried mandu!!! You know that crispy-yet-moist feeling, right, haha. There were four dumplings in there?!? We split them evenly, two each, haha.

Even the fish cake and rice cakes were super chewy... and I love tteokbokki broth, you know, hahaha. It had reduced down thick and wasn't even spicy, just so delicious ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ

Ate the egg too, for the protein...

Why two people can't make it to the fried rice
You know instant tteokbokki is supposed to end with fried rice, right? We tried to get there too, but we were way too full ㅠㅠㅠㅠ. Sadly couldn't manage it... that's how generous the portions are. I'd really recommend going as three so you can make it to the fried rice.

Oh!! Apparently if you write a review, you can get fried tteok or savory mayo rice balls?? If it were me, I'd take the rice balls, hahaha. Eat here, take a walk along Cheonggyecheon stream, and call it an Euljiro course — that was my review of Hyeonseoni-ne Cheonggye Instant Branch!
