Seoul Square basement gyukatsu with wasabi salt, a dinner date: Furato
In short
Furato Shokudo Seoul Square Direct Store is a Japanese gyukatsu (beef cutlet) restaurant on the first basement floor of Seoul Square by Seoul Station, in Jung-gu, Seoul. For a dinner date the writer ordered gyukatsu at 19,500 won and Japanese-style omurice at 14,500 won and grilled the beef on the personal brazier set into each table, finding wasabi with salt the best of the sauces on offer. Adding butter to the brazier and grilling it with the beef made the meal noticeably richer, and the whole dinner arrived fast in a clean Japanese-style dining room.

Today my girlfriend and I had dinner at Seoul Station. We went to Furato Shokudo, located in the basement of Seoul Square. It used to be a Western-style restaurant, and since I hadn't been in a while, I had no idea it had changed.
There's actually a surprising amount to eat in Seoul Square, so it's always hard to choose, but I was craving gyukatsu (Japanese-style breaded beef cutlet) after a long time, so I decided to visit.

Furato Shokudo looks clean and tidy, true to a Japanese restaurant. It's located in the basement of Seoul Square, on the side near the subway station where you can cross toward the Yonsei Severance building.

It was handy that I could check the menu from outside beforehand. It seems like a lot of people come for the omurice at lunch. Since it's a popular spot near Seoul Station, there may be a wait at lunchtime.
Inside the restaurant: a personal brazier at every table
The interior of Furato Shokudo Seoul Square Direct Store is clean and has a pretty strong Japanese vibe. Every table has its own personal brazier set up, and you order easily using the tag key at your seat.

I heard Lee Young-ji mentioned this place, and that CORTIS used to come here often back when they were trainees.

What we ordered: gyukatsu and Japanese-style omurice
- Gyukatsu: ₩19,500
- Japanese-style omurice: ₩14,500
- Tamago: ₩1,500
- Highball
We ordered the two best-sellers, gyukatsu and omurice. It had been a while since I'd had gyukatsu, so I was looking forward to it.

The food came out really fast. We chatted for a bit and it was already on the table.

There were instructions on the table for how to eat it deliciously, plus a review event notice — reading those while you wait, the food comes out in no time.
The main dish, gyukatsu, arrived first, and the staff kindly explained it to us. It's beef striploin cooked medium-rare, so you grill it yourself on the personal brazier until it's done to your liking. The meat looked really good, and the breading on the outside was clean too.

Next, the omurice arrived. They told us to cut it lengthwise and pour the sauce over it. The staff at Furato Shokudo were so friendly that there was nothing awkward about the whole meal.

Which sauce tastes best with gyukatsu? Wasabi and salt
They lit the brazier for us and I got straight to grilling the gyukatsu. You can eat it with whichever sauce you like, but for me the wasabi-and-salt combo was the best. Honestly, seeing how good the meat looked, I got hungry and just cooked it quickly.

Gyukatsu tastes great whether you grill it just a little or cook it all the way through.

You can try it with whatever sauce suits your taste, but the wasabi-and-salt combo was my favorite.
They also sell butter separately, and grilling it together with the butter definitely makes it richer and tastier.

What the Japanese-style omurice tastes like inside
The eggs on Furato Shokudo's Japanese-style omurice were in great condition. They were so soft and fluffy that it reminded me of someone on a YouTube Shorts trying to make omurice.
I cut right down the middle, though I didn't manage to slice it very neatly, haha. Still, the inside was nicely soft and fluffy. Time to pour the sauce generously.

Thinking about it, I think it tasted even better because there were no chewy vegetables inside — I'm not a fan of vegetables. With just rice, bacon, egg, and sauce, a whole bowl disappears in no time.

The omurice and gyukatsu combo was great, and we had a really tasty dinner. We even had a highball for the first time in a while and enjoyed a clean, satisfying meal.
Is Furato Shokudo worth it for a Seoul Station dinner?

We had a great dinner at Furato Shokudo, a popular spot in Seoul Square, with the gyukatsu and omurice combo. The night view around Seoul Station is beautiful, so after your meal, step outside and take a look around!
