Siheung outlet drive stop for charcoal bulgogi and stew: Bulhyangjip

In short

Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch is a charcoal grill-over-briquette restaurant facing Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Gyeonggi. After finishing a shopping trip at the Siheung outlets, the writer drove over and ordered the ₩15,900 smoky charcoal scallion bulgogi with country grandma's doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), bibim noodles, and steamed egg, and the bulgogi arrived so generous it looked like three servings. With that bulgogi-and-doenjang-jjigae pairing and a wide private lot, Bulhyangjip works well as a meal stop on a drive.

A drive stop after Siheung outlet shopping: Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch

Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch is a charcoal grill restaurant near Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung. Going outlet shopping in Siheung and then crossing over toward Mulwang Reservoir is already a proven, top-tier drive course.

I go on this drive myself sometimes just to clear my head, and this time I went to Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch, a Mulwang Reservoir restaurant my friend from Anyang strongly recommended.

Where do you park at Bulhyangjip? A private lot behind the building

Parking is always the thing I stress about most when driving somewhere, but Bulhyangjip has a spacious private lot right behind the building, so I could park with zero worries and just walk in.

By this point I'd already walked around the Siheung outlets doing serious shopping, so my stomach was growling and I headed for Bulhyangjip starving.

Bulhyangjip grills over real charcoal briquettes on a wire grill

Bulhyangjip specializes in grate grilling over charcoal, and it's not some fake smoky sauce — they actually use real charcoal fire to give the meat a strong smoky char and grill it golden brown. A genuine charcoal grill house.

Walking in toward the entrance, you can watch someone carefully grilling meat on the grate right in front of you, and my appetite exploded the second I stepped in.

Inside Bulhyangjip: seating and the mood right after break time

The interior of Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch is spacious and open — pure comfort. The seating is generously laid out too, so it looked great for family meals or group gatherings.

True to its reputation as a well-known Mulwang Reservoir restaurant, we timed our arrival right as break time ended, and even then the lot was already packed with cars and the dining room already had a lot of people eating. Surprised me.

Charcoal scallion bulgogi: a portion you would mistake for three servings

The signature charcoal scallion bulgogi came out first, and the moment it hit the table, my jaw dropped at the insanely generous portion.

A mountain of charcoal scallion bulgogi

Looking at the plate when it first arrived, I actually wondered 'did they mess up and bring three servings by mistake?' haha — the meat and shredded scallions were piled up like a mountain. The meat comes already perfectly pre-grilled over blazing charcoal, so all you do is heat the pan on the table, warm it briefly with the scallions, and dig right in.

To describe the taste of the charcoal scallion bulgogi: the moment it hits your mouth, you just gasp. First, the deep, rich charcoal smokiness spreads through your whole mouth and hits the tip of your tongue, then as you chew, the tender, soft bulgogi bursts with savory juices and moisture. On top of that, a subtle sweet-and-salty seasoning is worked all the way through without being overpowering, so you never get tired of it.

What really stands out is the crunchy, fragrant shredded scallions underneath, which cut through the richness of the bulgogi and add a sharp, savory kick — every mouthful of meat and scallion together is a perfect combo of texture and umami.

The standout is the country grandma's doenjang jjigae with the bulgogi

The best hidden gem on Bulhyangjip's menu that I'd strongly recommend is the ₩5,000 rustic grandma doenjang jjigae.

Rustic grandma doenjang jjigae

Earthenware pot of rustic grandma doenjang jjigae

This is genuinely not your everyday MSG-flavored stew — it's a deep, rich, homestyle doenjang (soybean paste) flavor you can only get here. The depth of that savory taste is on another level; I gasped after just one spoonful of the broth. Scoop in tofu and vegetables with white rice, pour the broth over generously, and mix it up — a whole bowl of rice disappears instantly.

Especially when you take a bite of the sweet-salty charcoal scallion bulgogi and follow it with a bite of this savory doenjang jjigae, your palate resets completely — the pairing is insane.

Charcoal gochujang bulgogi, bibim noodles, and steamed egg

The charcoal gochujang bulgogi we ordered on top was also a standout dish.

Charcoal gochujang bulgogi

It's coated in red gochujang (chili paste) sauce and grilled tightly over charcoal, but instead of artificial capsaicin heat, it's the deliciously sweet-spicy gochujang seasoning mingling with the charcoal smokiness — seriously addictive. The outside is lightly charred and crispy while the inside stays juicy, and it's perfect wrapped in lettuce with a piece of garlic on top; a mouthful of pure flavor.

The bibim noodles we ordered as a side were also a hidden gem. The tangy-sweet, slightly spicy special sauce is loaded with well-fermented kimchi bits, and the crunchy texture with every bite is amazing. Honestly, every side dish felt deliberately designed to make the main scallion bulgogi taste even better.

Wrap a big piece of scallion bulgogi around a bite of bibim noodles and slurp it down — a perfect combo.

The soft, fluffy mom's-hand egg custard soothes the spiciness in between bites, so you just keep eating without stopping.
