Gyeongju mochi shop with four fruit mochi melted en route: Tareudang

Tareudang is a giant fruit mochi and tart shop at 49 Sajeong-ro, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, in Hwangnidang-gil. It's open daily from 11:00 to 19:00, closing early once ingredients run out, and there's a public parking lot nearby.

Is there a wait at Tareudang in Hwangnidang-gil early in the morning?

Walking around Hwangnidang-gil on a trip to Gyeongju, Tareudang caught my eye — I'd seen it on Instagram, mochi stuffed with whole chunky fruit, and I'd been wanting to try it. I figured a popular place like this would mean a wait, but since I wandered by early in the morning, luckily there was no line at all!

The menu had giant fruit mochi packed with big chunks of fruit, plus tarts. With all the colorful fruit mochi lined up one by one, it was hard to decide which to pick. It seemed like a great spot to casually grab one while exploring Hwangnidang-gil, or to pick up a few to take home.

Tareudang's giant fruit mochi flavors and the 500 won discount on four

When I visited, Tareudang had dried persimmon yogurt, plain chocolate, peach yogurt, mango, fig, pineapple, and gold kiwi mochi, among others — more flavors than I expected. Since I like a lot of these fruits, picking was tough, but buying four or more meant ₩500 off each piece, so I went with four.

Each mochi came individually wrapped, with the packaging color varying by flavor, so I was curious what each one was even before opening them. You can buy a mix of flavors without them touching each other, and pull them out one at a time — convenient for taking them along.

What happens to the mochi with no cooler bag on the way home

I didn't buy a separate cooler bag at Tareudang, and by the time I made it from Gyeongju back home, the mochi had melted quite a bit. Since they're filled with fresh fruit and are a soft dessert to begin with, I'd recommend bringing a cooler bag along if you're traveling any real distance. When I opened them at home, some of that pretty look I'd seen at first was gone from the melting, but they still tasted good.

Pineapple mochi

I started with pineapple — soft, chewy mochi with pineapple inside, and one bite delivered the fruit's freshness right away. The tart-sweet, cooling character of pineapple kept it from feeling too heavy even paired with the sweet mochi.

Gold kiwi mochi

The gold kiwi had juicy, tangy-sweet notes, and biting into the chewy, soft mochi to find the moist kiwi inside made for a fun texture. The fruit's freshness left a clean finish too. With chunky fruit like this, I think fans of Gyeongju's fruit sando or fruit desserts would enjoy it too!

Peach mochi

Of the four, peach's soft fruit texture paired especially well with the mochi. The peach's mild sweetness and juicy, moist quality came through, blending nicely with the chewy outer layer for an easygoing bite. It wasn't overly sweet, leaning more into the fruit's own flavor — a safe, solid pick if you like fruit desserts.

Mango mochi

Last was mango, whose rich sweetness and soft flesh matched the chewy mochi well. All four had clearly distinct flavors, which made comparing them fun — and honestly, part of the fun of fruit mochi is just looking at the cross-section. Having melted on the way home, mine didn't look quite as perfect as the ones I'd seen on Instagram, but with all that chunky fruit inside, it was still delicious!

Who Tareudang is worth a stop for

Tareudang is a great stop if you want a different kind of snack while exploring Hwangnidang-gil — the giant fruit mochi, loaded with fresh whole fruit, has a charm quite distinct from a regular cake or bread. Going early meant an easy, wait-free purchase, and the combo of chewy mochi and big fruit was delicious, so if you're after something different for dessert in Hwangnidang-gil, I'd recommend it. If you plan to carry it a long way, bring a cooler bag so it doesn't melt.
