Korean set-meal dinner with 12 side dishes in Goyang: Kim Myeongju
In short
Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Station Branch is a hanjeongsik (Korean set-meal) restaurant serving stone-pot rice near Exit 1 of Wondang Station in Goyang, Gyeonggi. Over dinner with friends the writer cross-ordered three set meals — Tteuranchae Bapsang at 13,000 won per person and the ganjang gejang (soy-sauce marinated crab) and charcoal-grilled sets at 30,000 won each — and shared 12 side dishes, cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) and sungnyung (scorched rice tea), with rice, sides and water refilled freely at the self-service corner. The eggplant fritters and cheonggukjang were the highlights, and the Wondang Station branch suited the writer's taste better than other locations.

I'm always chasing dopamine, wherever it takes me. Today I went to Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Station Branch in Wondang. This is a spot I've already visited many times, paying with my own money!!!
Actually I tried another branch once.. and it just wasn't as good as the Wondang Station branch ㅠㅠ The grilled fish was tough and the side dishes tasted a bit too seasoned..? So ever since then, I only go to the Wondang Station branch of Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang!!!!
Where is Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Station Branch, and is there parking?

Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Station Branch is close enough to Wondang Station to be convenient by public transit. This time I visited for dinner with friends, and there's a spacious lot right in front of the restaurant, so it looked fine to drive as well.

Walking in, I felt that calm, tidy atmosphere unique to hanjeongsik restaurants. This is also a good spot to check out if you're looking for Hwajeong or Samsong restaurants and end up widening your search toward Wondang ^^
Just a heads up — they're closed during the Chuseok holiday!
Inside the restaurant: seating, reservations and the self-service corner
Inside, the whole space had that comfortable, classic hanjeongsik feel. It felt natural for a meal with friends, and honestly, I thought it would also suit taking your parents out to eat.

Since it's such a well-known spot in Wondang, if there's a wait, you can use Catch Table!

The table layout was easy to eat at, and there was a self-service corner where you could help yourself to rice, side dishes and water. The restroom is inside the restaurant, and there are plenty of baby chairs available :)

There's also coffee available after the meal.
Tteuranchae Bapsang menu and prices

The Tteuranchae Bapsang, the basic set meal, could be ordered for ₩13,000 per person. The ganjang gejang set and the charcoal-grilled pork set were each ₩30,000 per person, and the set menus could be cross-ordered for parties of two or more.

You can also order à la carte dishes! The basic set comes with freshly made hot stone-pot rice, savory cheonggukjang, and a variety of side dishes.
Rice, sides and water were available as much as you wanted from the self-service corner. I noticed the staff adjusting the heat level for the dishes meant to be eaten warm right at the self-service station. Whenever a side dish ran low, it got refilled right away, so the whole thing felt well managed!!

This eggplant fritter.. seriously so good... Every time I come, I feel like I eat more of this than rice lol
The lettuce wraps were also stored and kept really fresh, which was satisfying. Since the side dishes are made fresh daily, they really are delicious!
Japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) is the only one not on the self-serve bar, since it's a dish that can get soggy or spoil quickly, so they keep it managed hygienically at the counter instead! I was impressed by how thoughtful they were even about details like this. So if you ask, they'll happily bring you more haha
Side dishes sold by the pack to take home

They actually sell these delicious side dishes in the restaurant!! It's only ₩5,000 per pack, and the portions are genuinely huge!

Every side dish was delicious, but the bellflower root and garlic scapes were especially good ㅠㅠ
Three set meals from one cross-order

This time we ordered the Tteuranchae Bapsang, the ganjang gejang set, and the charcoal-grilled pork set. Since cross-ordering is possible, we got to try a bit of everything and I was so happy hehe

First, the Tteuranchae Bapsang came generously set with freshly made stone-pot rice, cheonggukjang, and a variety of basic side dishes.

First I scoop the rice out of the hot stone pot, pour in warm water, cover it, and promise to meet again later (?), then focus fully on the rice lol
Cheonggukjang, my friend's top pick
I don't even like cheonggukjang.. but I always end up eating two bowls of it at Kim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Wondang Station Branch lolol

It's better than my mom's.. (sorry mom) and it's packed full of hearty ingredients! One of my friends picked cheonggukjang as her single favorite dish of the whole meal!!!!
What are the 12 side dishes?

There are a whopping 12 side dishes served!!

Honestly they were all so good it was hard to pick — the eggplant fritter was crispy outside and soft inside, and the garlic scapes, perilla leaf namul, and braised potatoes were all the kind of thing you keep reaching for haha. Oh, and the bellflower root was so good too..... ㅠㅠㅠㅠ
The other side dishes were all well seasoned too, and the ones meant to be eaten warm stayed warm, which kept the whole meal flowing nicely.
How was the ganjang gejang set?

The ganjang gejang set featured fresh crab marinated in a secret sauce.

Instead of just the sharp saltiness typical of ganjang gejang, there was also a rich savory depth, and the crab was packed full of meat, making it great to eat with rice.

They gave us tongs and scissors to cut the crab into easy-to-eat pieces!

With the meat packed to the shell, I ate my rice very thoroughly haha. My second friend said garlic scapes and the crab were her favorite of the meal hehe
Charcoal-grilled set: mild enough for kids

The charcoal-grilled pork set featured domestic pork marinated in a house-made sauce, then grilled over real charcoal for smoky flavor.

Under the meat there was a layer of onion, and eating the charcoal pork with the onion wrapped together worked really well as a combo.

The sweet marinade and the charcoal aroma came together nicely, and it worked well as a side to eat with rice too. This is totally the kind of flavor kids would love too!!

Finishing the meal with sungnyung
After eating so much and getting so full.. you still can't skip this sungnyung, right?
I topped the sungnyung with bellflower root salad or garlic scapes, had some with the cheonggukjang broth, had some with the braised potatoes... and before I knew it, I'd finished everything lolol
From the neat side dishes to the stone-pot rice and cheonggukjang, to the ganjang gejang and charcoal-grilled pork, each dish let you enjoy the meal in its own way. If you're looking for Hwajeong hanjeongsik or Samsong hanjeongsik, come to Wondang instead!!!! It's genuinely amazing. It's also a great spot to bring your parents. Once again I went chasing dopamine and came back full and satisfied 🍚
