Yeon-makchang vs. teuk-makchang: what is the difference?
The menu at Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch includes par-grilled yeon-makchang 200g for ₩14,000 and par-grilled teuk-makchang 200g for ₩14,000. There's also Korean pork belly, direct-fired spicy chicken feet, and beef-brisket-scallop combo, plus a bunch of side dishes 🥺✨
They explained the difference: yeon-makchang is round, chewy and soft, while teuk-makchang is square-shaped with a more textured, chewy bite ~😙

Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch is currently running various review events, so it might be worth joining in too 😙🎶

Inside Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch and its self-serve corner
Since Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch is brand new, it's super clean and pleasant 🫰✨ The seats are spacious and plentiful, perfect for group gatherings 😋 They even have a baby chair, so it's great to bring little ones. The owner and staff were all so kind, which made it even better 💕

The self-serve corner was also kept super clean! There's vegetables and kimchi you can help yourself to as much as you like 🥺💕

The basic table setting came out neat, with bean sprout soup, cucumber, carrots, garlic and more! The bean sprout soup had zero fishy smell and was delicious 😋👍

Par-grilled yeon-makchang and teuk-makchang, 200g for 14,000 won
🔥 The gorgeous par-grilled yeon-makchang & teuk-makchang, the visuals are insane!! 🥹🫰✨ They come already par-grilled so you just finish cooking them a bit more on the table, so convenient 👏✨ The moment they hit the grill, the sizzling sound and grilled aroma just exploded — I honestly nearly lost it ㅠㅠ 🤤

The par-grilled yeon-makchang is chewy, and the more you chew the more the savory juices burst out — crispy outside, juicy inside, one bite and you just go "wow… this is seriously amazing" 😭👍 Dip it in makjang sauce loaded with cheongyang chili and it's a one-way ticket to heaven 🚂💨
The par-grilled teuk-makchang is a bit thicker than yeon-makchang with a springier texture! If you like a chewier bite, teuk-makchang is a must-try...💖 Zero off smell, super clean, I devoured it haha 😋 Personally my favorite is still the yeon-makchang 🎶

How to grill makchang so it tastes best
- Cut into 1cm thickness and flip front and back
- Grill slowly over low heat
- Eat once both sides turn golden brown
Grilling slowly as instructed and dipping it in salt, makjang sauce, and the special spicy sauce in turns — it was honestly.. pure honey 🥹🥹🫰 Tastes like you don't even need to go to Daegu for makchang!!👅

They also make a version of makjang sauce loaded with chili, green onion, and perilla leaf haha 🤭 That combo is delicious too, but my favorite combo was the special spicy sauce!

Does Sapporo matcha beer go with makchang?
🍺 The moment we'd been waiting for — Sapporo draft & Sapporo matcha beer 🍻 Take a bite of makchang, raise the glass, cheers! The regular Sapporo draft needs no introduction — cool, super smooth going down, it washed away any greasiness completely 💙
And then, out of pure curiosity, we ordered Sapporo matcha beer! 🍵✨ Honestly I was skeptical thinking 'matcha... in beer...?' and gave it a half-hearted try. But wow…! The sweet-bitter matcha aroma spread subtly and matched the beer's crispness so well 💚 Eat a piece of savory, oily makchang, then take a sip of the bitter, cool matcha beer — it completely resets your palate! It's sweet enough it almost feels like eating ice cream?.? Anyway, this combo is seriously magic... If you go to Yeon Makchang, definitely try the matcha beer, highly recommend 💯
If you're not great with alcohol, the matcha Sapporo is highly recommended 😙💖

Makchang on top of old-style jjajangmyeon, 6,000 won
🍜 The old-style jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), surprisingly high quality out of nowhere! Once we were nearly done with the meat, we wanted a bit of carbs so we ordered jjajangmyeon as a side — honestly I didn't expect much from noodles at a barbecue place... but the visuals surprised me first, and the taste surprised me second 😳
The sweet, savory old-style black bean sauce with springy noodles just kept going down, slurp after slurp! Piling makchang on top and wrapping it together, the sweet-salty-savory harmony was seriously insane 🤤 If you're torn on side dishes, definitely order the jjajangmyeon too — it's a hidden gem combo 🍜✨

Restrooms, free slush dessert and fabric deodorizer
The restrooms are located inside the restaurant, and they're gender-separated 🚽 🚻

The inside of the restroom was extremely clean too!! Two stalls and foam soap, absolutely top-notch 🙌

There's an ice slush machine at the counter, so you can enjoy a sweet dessert after finishing your makchang ❄️ 🍧 Two flavors too — yogurt and cola! ✌️

If you're worried about smelling like makchang afterward, don't worry — they have fabric deodorizer available!!🙂↔️ Such a thoughtful touch 🥺🫰✨

My boyfriend and I each grabbed a slush after paying and wrapped things up that way 😙✌️
Is Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch worth a visit in Wonju?
- Atmosphere & taste: Par-grilled makchang full of smoky char flavor, no off smell, so savory 💖
- Unusual combo: Definitely try the Sapporo matcha beer! Great pairing with makchang 🍵🍺
- Sweet dessert: Try both slush flavors before you leave!
- Pro tip: Piling makchang onto the old-style jjajangmyeon is sweet-salty-savory perfection 🤤
Today I left full and happy once again >_< 💕 If you're in Dangye-dong craving chewy par-grilled makchang with a cold beer, I highly recommend Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch! My chance of returning is 20000% ✨✨
