Moms' night out at a Wonju makchang restaurant: Yeon Makchang Dangye

In short

Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch is a par-grilled makchang (grilled pork intestine) restaurant in the middle of the Dangye-dong food street in Wonju, Gangwon. For a moms' get-together dinner the table shared par-grilled makchang, the spicy clam wine stew limited to 10 servings a day (6,000 won on a first order) and yeolmu bibim guksu (cold spicy noodles with young radish kimchi), and because the makchang arrives already par-grilled there was little work left at the grill. Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch suits a group dinner that wants a sharp, brothy stew and noodles alongside the meat.

There are nights when you can't decide what to eat for dinner, right? Some days you want meat but not just samgyeopsal, something a bit special. Other days you want a menu that pairs well with a drink and still fills you up. This particular evening I had a get-together with my mom friends, so we went for dinner in Dangye-dong, Wonju. There are so many good restaurants in that area that it's genuinely hard to choose — but this time we picked Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch.

Where is Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch, and what does it look like?

Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch sits right in the center of the food street near the Dangye-dong residential area in Wonju, so it's very easy to find.

The sign is eye-catching even from a distance, so even first-timers can find it easily. The retro yet tidy exterior gives off that cozy pojangmacha (street tent bar) feel before you even step inside. And it's been certified as several celebrities' favorite makchang spot!!!

What the moms' table ordered

We sat down and looked over the menu. Alongside the main par-grilled makchang, there were plenty of good side dishes to pair with it. What we ordered that day was:

  • Par-grilled makchang
  • Spicy clam wine stew (ttaengcho baekhap suljjim)
  • Yeolmu bibim guksu (cold radish-green noodles)

Looking at the posters on the wall and the writing on the menu, there was even an explanation of what makes their makchang special — you could feel the restaurant's pride in their food.

Basic side dishes and the self-serve corner

After ordering, the basic spread arrived. First came a warm bean sprout soup, good for a spoonful while waiting for the meat to cook. They also gave us the ingredients to mix our own dipping sauce for the makchang.

If you want more side dishes beyond the basics, there's a self-serve corner — you can just grab as much as you need. It was convenient not having to call a staff member every time we wanted more sides while eating meat.

Par-grilled makchang: why there is little grilling left to do

Par-grilled makchang served ready to finish on the grill

The par-grilled makchang we'd been waiting for finally arrived. Since it's already been pre-cooked, you just brown it a bit more on the grill. That took away the burden of having to grill raw makchang for a long time from scratch, which I really appreciated.

Once it was mostly cooked, a staff member came over and cut the makchang into bite-sized pieces for us.

Just the sizzling sound on the grill was enough to get us excited.

Once it turned golden brown on the grill, it was finally ready to eat. The cut pieces, browned on both sides, had a mouthwatering crisp outside while staying chewy inside.

At this point I mixed up a dipping sauce from the basic ingredients provided. Dipping the makchang in a sauce made to taste added even more flavor to the already savory meat, and I kept reaching for more. We were enjoying it so much I forgot to take eating photos, haha.

Spicy clam wine stew, only 10 servings a day

Spicy clam wine stew full of clams

We ordered the spicy clam wine stew (ttaengcho baekhap suljjim) to go along with the makchang. The milky broth is packed with big, fresh clams, and the green chili peppers give it a spicy, deep, refreshing kick. A spoonful of that spicy broth between bites of savory makchang cuts right through the richness — a perfect pairing.

This is a special dish sold in a limited quantity of 10 servings a day. Worth noting: if you order it along with your first order, it's discounted to just ₩6,000 — a great deal!!

Finishing with yeolmu bibim guksu

Yeolmu bibim guksu loaded with yeolmu, perilla leaves, and egg strips

We finished the meal with yeolmu bibim guksu (cold noodles tossed with young radish greens). The moment it landed on the table, our jaws dropped at the huge pile of toppings — crisp yeolmu, fragrant perilla leaves, and savory egg strips all piled on generously. The visual alone was overwhelming.

After mixing it thoroughly and taking a big bite, the sweet-spicy sauce, crisp yeolmu, and soft egg strips came together beautifully. The noodles were springy too, and wrapping a piece of browned makchang in with a bite of noodles made for the perfect finish. Definitely a certified Dangye-dong, Wonju favorite!!

Who is Yeon Makchang Dangye Branch best for?

Dinner at Yeon Makchang that day was better for having several dishes together rather than just makchang alone. It seems like a place you'd think of on days when you're craving makchang, days with dinner plans with friends, or days when you want something different alongside your meat. If you're looking for a good restaurant in Dangye-dong, Wonju, it's worth trying the par-grilled makchang together with the limited spicy clam wine stew and the yeolmu bibim guksu.
