Hongdae grill house, 600g set with potato and mushroom: Gogikkun

In short

Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, 521 meters from Hongik University Station Exit 6 and right beside the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, with an outdoor-patio feel. The writer ordered the Hanwoo/Handon 2-person SET, 600g of Korean beef sirloin with pork neck and pork rib meat, which staff grilled course by course alongside potato, mushroom and minari (water dropwort), then finished with half-and-half naengmyeon and fried rice. Gogikkun Gimchunbae is a good pick when you want to compare several cuts at one table.

I was looking for a place to eat meat in Hongdae and ended up at Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch, right near Gyeongui Line Forest Park. It's an easy walk from Hongik University Station, and being right by the forest path made it nice to stroll before or after eating. Best of all, they have a set menu where you can enjoy beef and pork together, so it was perfect for when I wanted to try several kinds of meat at once!!!

Eating the meat with that outdoor-patio vibe was so nice!! The food tasted great, but I felt like the atmosphere played a big part too.

What comes in the 600g Hanwoo/Handon set for two?

We ordered the Hanwoo/Handon 2-person SET, which lets you taste Korean beef and Korean pork together. It's 600g total, and includes Korean beef sirloin along with pork neck and pork rib meat.

They also sell various other combos and individual cuts! Worth flipping through the menu to check.

Staff grill the Korean beef sirloin first

Sometimes eating just one kind of meat feels a bit lacking, so having beef and pork together made choosing easier and let us eat a wider variety. It also helped that the meat wasn't all brought out at once — the staff grilled it in order. First up, the Korean beef. They started by grilling the hanwoo first~ Potato, mushroom and minari (water dropwort) came generously alongside so we could enjoy the meat properly!!

They laid the thick Korean beef on the grill and browned it beautifully — the smell alone was already stirring up my appetite. The well-grilled beef was tender with a nutty richness, and yeah, beef really does taste best when it's not overcooked, just grilled to the right point. One bite in, and I could really taste the juices and the meat's own flavor — satisfying from the very start!!

Naengmyeon served half spicy, half broth

You can't have grilled meat without naengmyeon (cold noodles)! Nice that you can get it half spicy (bibim) and half plain (mul) too. A bite of meat, a bite of naengmyeon — that combo is unmissable~

How did the pork neck and pork rib meat taste?

The pork neck was mild but juicy, while the pork rib meat had a chewier texture — even though it's all pork, each cut was fun to eat in its own way. Going through beef then pork in order let us compare the flavors and textures of each. And honestly, what I liked most was that the staff grilled everything for us. At some BBQ places you're too busy grilling to focus on conversation, but here they grilled it to just the right point for eating, so we could chat comfortably through the meal~

Round two of the meat was so good!! This is a place I'd recommend coming back to. The mushrooms had soaked up all that meat juice too, so we really got the full experience~

Put minari and kimchi on top of the meat for one bite and it's pure bliss. So good the bites just kept coming, one after another~

Finishing the meal with fried rice

Of course, you have to finish with fried rice!! The red seasoning was properly fried up, so it couldn't not taste good. I'd recommend going for the full course — meat, then the naengmyeon side, then fried rice~
