In short

Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant serving hanwoo beef and Korean pork in a red-brick building along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park in Mapo, Seoul. Reserved through Naver for a quick meal before work with a senior coworker, the window table came with the beef and pork set for two, 600g for 109,000 won, plus half-and-half naengmyeon (cold noodles) for 7,000 won, and staff grilled the beef skirt, pork neck and short rib from start to finish so the conversation never stopped. Even for a short, alcohol-free lunch, Gogikkun Gimchunbae was a satisfying Hongdae Korean BBQ stop.

How to find Gogikkun Gimchunbae in the red-brick building by Gyeongui Line Forest Park

Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch is an 8-minute walk from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 6 along the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, in a spot with an eye-catching red-brick building. On a day when I had to eat with a coworker before work, this place — which I'd always been curious about while walking the forest path — came to mind, so I booked ahead.

Seeing the 'corkage-free' sign out front made it a little sad that I had to go to work afterward 😭

Window tables and outdoor seats: what the Gogikkun Gimchunbae dining room is like

Inside there are tables toward the back and window seats, while outside there's yajang (outdoor patio) seating. Since I'd booked ahead, we were shown to a window table and got to start our meal in a great mood.

As soon as we sat down, they set up the basic side dishes — minari (water dropwort), mushrooms, kimchi, bean sprouts, shredded scallions, and more, way more varied than I expected.

We ordered the set for two so we could try both hanwoo and handon, plus the half-and-half naengmyeon and a zero-sugar cola.

  • Beef/pork set for two 600g (₩109,000): pork neck (250g) + short rib (200g) + today's beef (150g)

Being able to taste a range of meats in one sitting was what I loved about Gimchunbae.

The 600g beef and pork set for two, grilled by staff from start to finish

One of the biggest perks of Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch is that a staff member grills everything for you from start to finish. That let us relax and focus fully on our conversation.

When the set for two arrived, the meat quality looked really great, right? ><

While grilling the beef skirt, they specially dabbed on fat trimmings to coat it.

The well-cooked beef skirt was placed on a stand, and the moment it hit my mouth, the lean meat and fat blended together so smoothly 🙌🏻 It was also fun pairing it to taste with wasabi, ssamjang (dipping sauce), salt, or fermented shrimp.

Next they grilled the thick pork neck and chewy short rib in turn, and just as they were nearly done, they added kimchi and minari onto the grill too, adding a fragrant touch.

Looks delicious, right,,?🙌🏻

We tried it on top of potatoes, tried it with shredded scallions — with so many side dishes, we ate really well.

Is the 7,000-won half-and-half naengmyeon worth ordering?

Gogikkun Gimchunbae's half-and-half naengmyeon (₩7,000) comes with mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) and bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles) in a single bowl. I'd been looking forward to this almost as much as the main dishes — combining both types of cold noodles in one bowl was a first for me, and it felt refreshing.

Half-and-half naengmyeon with mul naengmyeon and bibim naengmyeon

I lean toward bibim naengmyeon so I was a little worried, but the portion was more generous than expected, plenty for two to share. The sweet-and-tangy bibim naengmyeon was delicious, but the cool, refreshing mul naengmyeon really cut through the greasiness too!

Doenjang jjigae and rice served at the end of the meal

And of course, no meal is complete without doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew)! Note that during the review event you can get doenjang jjigae + rice, or a serving of pork skin. The hot, rich stew rounded off the meal on a full, satisfying note.

Why Gogikkun Gimchunbae works for a quick meal before work

Being able to eat while looking out at the Gyeongui Line Forest Park scenery from the window table made this more than enough to enjoy a brief bit of ease before work. Not having to grill anything ourselves and being able to focus purely on eating was especially nice, as was sitting by the window taking in the forest-path view while we ate.

With corkage-free service on offer too, I'll have to bring a bottle of wine next time. >< If you want a hearty meal before work, or want to enjoy hanwoo and handon by the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, I'd recommend Gogikkun Gimchunbae Hongdae Supgil Branch!
