Eonyang, Ulsan café, busy weekend parking: MUG black lemon smoothie

I found MUG while looking for a slightly different kind of café in Ulsan.

It's more of a place to linger, walk around and rest than a typical café, so even though it's a large café and it was the weekend, I could relax without feeling rushed.

Where MUG is and what parking is like

MUG is located at 90 Hyangsandagae-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, South Korea, open daily from 10:00 to 20:00, with free parking available in the lot right in front of the café.

Looking around MUG's exterior, the deep black wood catches your eye. At first glance it's easy to assume it's just a unique interior material, but apparently this wood carries a story unique to MUG. I'll get into that story later in the post.

There are bubbles constantly being made at the front entrance, which is great fun for people with kids — and honestly, adults too.

You can park in the large lot in front of the café, though it was nearly full between 1 and 2pm on the weekend. Still, since the café is so large and turnover is quick, parking didn't seem like a real worry.

This large Ulsan café also runs a kids' care zone, so infants and children can come too.

Inside MUG: exhibition space and how big the café is

Walking through the front door, there's a small exhibition space — a nice chance to casually take in some art.

The first thing I noticed stepping into MUG was the sheer scale of the space.

These days, when I look for a large café in Ulsan, I'm not just after a place with lots of seats — I want somewhere I can actually enjoy the space itself, and in that sense MUG felt a bit different.

The indoor area flows into a wide outdoor space too, so it never feels cramped — you can linger comfortably. On a nice day, it looked especially good to take your coffee outside and stroll around slowly.

True to a large bakery café, there was a huge lineup of breads ready. And when you're at a café, dessert alongside coffee is a must.

Even just looking at them, the breads seemed to use ingredients generously, and they looked really delicious.

MUG's signature dessert is the cinnamon roll. Since it's the flagship menu item, I couldn't not try one, so I grabbed one for myself.

Apparently the bakery lineup changes depending on the season and the ingredients used, so it sounds like there'd be fun in checking what's on offer each time you visit.

MUG's walking trail, outdoor tables and dogs

Another standout feature of MUG is its wide outdoor space.

Choosing a café to visit with a dog is trickier than it sounds, but MUG has a spacious yard, a lawn, and a surrounding dirt-path trail, making it a great place to spend time with your pet.

The cinnamon roll I ordered had a subtle cinnamon aroma, a crisp exterior and a moist interior, with that signature sweet, fragrant cinnamon-roll flavor — a great dessert to pair with coffee.

The drink I chose was a lemon smoothie, and true to the brand's concept, it came out in black.

The 2013 wildfire story behind MUG's black wood

The land where MUG now sits lost all of its landscaping trees to a wildfire in 2013, and the café chose to preserve the traces and memory of that fire within the space. MUG's black wood isn't just decoration for atmosphere — it's part of the space, carrying the meaning of starting over from a burned site. Once I knew this story, the space felt a little different from how I'd first seen it. The heavy, somber mood the black wood gives off no longer felt like it was there just for style.

Final verdict: why MUG doesn't feel crowded on weekends

These days there are so many large cafés in Ulsan that scale alone isn't enough to be memorable.

Being away from the city center might make it less accessible, but I actually felt that fit MUG's atmosphere well. Since it's tucked away rather than surrounded by a busy, crowded downtown, you feel like you've stepped away from everyday life the moment you arrive.

If you're looking for a spacious café in Ulsan, want to spend relaxed time with your dog, or want somewhere with a bit more story than an ordinary café, this large Ulsan café, MUG, is worth a visit.
