Ulju, Ulsan large café with an observatory deck: matcha latte at MUG

Today I found the perfect place to escape the stuffy forest of city buildings and get some real rest..! It's MUG, a huge mountain-view café hidden deep in the forests of Eonyang, Ulju, Ulsan — sharing my healing visit where both my eyes and my mouth were happy.

Where MUG is and what time it opens

The moment I arrived by navigation, the exterior of the building made me gasp out loud. The design was so grand and sophisticated that I felt like I'd wandered into an art museum by mistake. The sheer scale and presence made me feel like I was here to see an exhibition at a fancy gallery before I'd even stepped inside.

True to Ulsan large-café form, the parking lot was massive too — an open lot with room for a good 100 cars. Even a nervous new driver could bring a car here without worry..!

Outside the building there's a beautifully landscaped fountain and pond that's fun just to look at. There's also a well-set-up outdoor terrace where you can relax to the sound of trickling water. Sitting on that terrace on a nice day, watching the cool fountain and pond, sounds like healing in itself.

This place goes way beyond just being a spacious café — it boasts a truly massive scale with a walking trail, a metasequoia path, an observatory, and an ecological pond all included. The entire MUG grounds are landscaped like one giant arboretum or nature park, so there's more than enough here to spend a leisurely afternoon strolling around, on top of just having coffee. With so much to see and so much room to wander, this scale is overwhelming — I bet kids or parents brought along here would love it.

There's also an art exhibition space inside.

Inside MUG: high ceilings and seating layout

Stepping inside, the charm of a large café really shines through.

The ceilings are incredibly high, so the moment you walk in there's no stuffiness at all — just a cool, grand feeling that's amazing. The interior space is also very roomy, with everything from seats for someone spending time alone to large tables that can comfortably fit a big family or group gathering, so it was easy to find a seat suited to whatever you came for. Quite an impressive scale 👍

MUG's bread selection and Lescure butter

True to its reputation as a bakery café, one whole side of the store is filled with a really wide variety of bread. Each one looked freshly baked, golden and glossy, mouthwatering just to look at. With everything from plain meal breads to sweet dessert pastries, there was such a wide range to choose from that just picking bread was part of the fun.

On one side of the store there's a sign explaining the butter used in the bakery — seeing that they use top-grade French Lescure butter made me even more excited to try the bread haha 😍

There's an oven for warming bread, and even the water here is different — lemon water and grapefruit water.

I sat at a window seat looking out at the mountains — the mountain view here is amazing..!? Sitting here was seriously healing.

MUG's 100% organic Hadong matcha latte, 7,500 won

I took a sip of the matcha latte first — the artificial sweetness wasn't overdone, and the deep, slightly bitter character of the Hadong matcha blended smoothly with the nutty milk. Probably thanks to the organic ingredients, the aftertaste was really clean with a lingering depth, so you could really taste the matcha itself. Matcha lovers are going to love this one 😍

The signature MUG black latte, 7,500 won

This is the signature menu item — the MUG black latte. It's a drink where a sweet, smooth condensed-milk base meets clean cold brew, and the deep sweetness of the condensed milk balances nicely with the heavy yet clean flavor of the cold brew, so it's pleasantly sweet without feeling cloying at all.

MUG salt bread, 3,500 won, and the cake

The salt bread had a great buttery aroma, a lovely shape, and tasted great. The bread was also nice and big, so it felt pretty good value too.

The Lamington cake also had a really pretty shape, and the balance of chocolate and cherry aroma was pretty good. Another day of proper healing with a great drink and a forest view.

Why MUG works for a visit with kids

There's a separate space set up on one side of the store for changing baby diapers. With this kind of thoughtful setup for families visiting with young children, it looks like a really comfortable, low-stress place to rest even if you're bringing little ones.

Is MUG in Ulju worth the trip?

This was a café of unmatched scale, from an exterior that calls to mind a grand art museum to a pond, fountain, metasequoia path, and observatory.

Thanks to the wide-open ceiling height and varied seating layout, anyone can come here and relax comfortably, and the thoughtful touches — right down to a baby diaper-changing station — really stood out.

The quality and flavor of the menu is excellent too, from the bakery made with premium Lescure butter to the 100% organic Hadong matcha latte and the signature MUG black latte.
