In short

Dongyang Baekban (동양백반) is a Korean restaurant in the heart of Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, where Sumi dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken stew) and perilla oil yukjeon (pan-fried beef) go well with a drink. Traveling without the kids, a couple ordered the Sumi dakbokkeumtang for 28,000 won, a full plate of perilla oil yukjeon for 18,000 won, two bottles of Chamisul soju, and a Sipjangsaeng Beer Guleum for 6,000 won. On this return visit the food at Dongyang Baekban tasted exactly as it did in the early days after opening.

Dinner and a drink at Dongyang Baekban after walking Hwangridan-gil

A trip to Gyeongju with my husband Nampyo. After walking around Hwangridan-gil and picking up a bracelet at the flagship store Myeongtwe, it was about time for dinner. We headed to Dongyang Baekban, a Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant known for good food, to have dinner and a light drink or two.

Actually, this wasn't my first time at Dongyang Baekban. I'd visited back when it first opened with friends who live in Gyeongju, and had dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) that I remembered being pretty delicious. Since I was back in Gyeongju after a while, it brought back that memory, so I decided to revisit. Bottom line — even coming back after all this time, it was just as satisfying.

Dongyang Baekban sits right in the center of Hwangridan-gil, so it's easy to duck in for a meal while sightseeing. While walking around Hwangridan-gil during a Gyeongju trip, you'll see plenty of pasta places and fusion food, but sometimes while traveling you just crave Korean food. With a wide range of Korean dishes from dakbokkeumtang to yukjeon to hot pots, it's a solid pick for anyone looking for Korean food on Hwangridan-gil.

What two people ordered, and what it cost

  • Sumi dakbokkeumtang (spicy braised chicken) ₩28,000
  • Perilla oil yukjeon (beef pancake), full plate ₩18,000
  • Chamisul soju x2 ₩10,000
  • Sipjangsaeng Beer Guleum ₩6,000

There are plenty of dishes that go well alongside dakbokkeumtang, so it seems like a good place to order a variety of things if you come with a group. Since we came for dinner and drinks, we went all out — chicken stew, yukjeon, soju, and beer. Haha.

Why we came back for the Sumi dakbokkeumtang

The biggest reason we came back to Dongyang Baekban was, of course, the dakbokkeumtang!

Sweet-and-spicy sauce coating the Sumi dakbokkeumtang

Since I remembered enjoying it so much when I first came with friends who live in Gyeongju, I ordered it again without hesitation, and it was just as satisfying after all this time. The sweet-and-spicy sauce with the chicken pairs well with rice, but it's also perfect for an evening drink like the one we were having.

Sometimes when you revisit a place you loved after time has passed, it just isn't the same anymore and that's disappointing — but Dongyang Baekban tasted exactly like I remembered, which was great.

It felt like a waste to only order dakbokkeumtang, so we also got a full plate of perilla oil yukjeon (beef pancake).

The perilla oil yukjeon came in a mini size for ₩9,000 or a full plate for ₩18,000, so you could pick based on how much you wanted. We went with the full plate! A bite of warm yukjeon followed by a cold sip of beer — that combo was great too. Alternating the spicy dakbokkeumtang with bites of yukjeon, I felt like we'd picked well for a dinner that doubled as drinks.

And then there was Sipjangsaeng Beer, which caught my eye just from the name since we were drinking it in Gyeongju. There were two kinds — Guleum and Sonamu — each ₩6,000. I went with Sipjangsaeng Beer Guleum! We also ordered a bottle of Chamisul, and Nampyo and I sat with our dakbokkeumtang and yukjeon, having a drink each and chatting about this and that.

Each of us ordering our own preferred drink and pouring it ourselves, haha — we're not fighting, lol. It's just easier for us this way, so that's usually how we do it.

Traveling as a couple without the kids, even the pace of eating is different. Haha. We ate slowly before the food got cold, chatted over drinks about this and that. It had been a while since I'd had such a relaxed dinner with real conversation.

Is Dongyang Baekban a good spot for drinks on Hwangridan-gil?

Hwangridan-gil has no shortage of good restaurants, but if you're craving a hearty Korean meal while traveling, or looking for a spot to have a light drink with dakbokkeumtang or yukjeon, Dongyang Baekban is worth a stop. It was a great place for a Hwangridan-gil date night with dinner and drinks, just like ours. Even coming back after a long time, Dongyang Baekban, our go-to Hwangridan-gil Korean restaurant, was still delicious.
