I had plans in Bonghwang-dong and swung by a sushi place on Bongridan-gil that's famous for its direct-flame-seared flavor. It's the kind of place that wins over both people who can't handle raw fish and total flame-flavor addicts, so I wanted to review it in detail.

What is Sushi Hwa on Bongridan-gil like inside?
Sushi Hwa has that cute-but-clean exterior with the signature Bongridan-gil vibe, haha 🤍 There are bar seats plus tables for 2 to 8, so the layout works for solo dining or a lunch date.

The moment I stepped inside, it was clear this wasn't the heavy, formal kind of Japanese restaurant — the whole place felt casual and hip. Bright warm lighting throughout, and the posters on the walls gave it a nice exotic touch. The bar seats and 2–8 person tables are laid out efficiently, so it's great for eating solo or coming for a lunch date with friends or a partner (。•ᴗ•。)

[ Ordered ] Sushi Hwa flame-seared sushi set ₩38,000
Once the order goes in, you can hear the torch searing sounds from the kitchen, and a faint smoky aroma spreads through the restaurant — it gets your appetite going before the food even arrives.

The side udon and cold soba at Sushi Hwa: how do they taste?
The flame-seared sushi set came with warm udon and icy cold soba on the side. The udon arrived first, piled generously with fish cake, crown daisy greens and tenkasu (fried tempura bits) — it looked great and the umami was insane. Could easily go for two bowls *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

The broth was deep and rich, and the noodles had a great springy, chewy texture. Sushi plus warm broth — best combo ever!

Sushi wouldn't be complete without cold soba, either. Highly recommend it as an essential summer side!

Stir in some grated radish and wasabi into the cool, icy broth and you get that sweet-salty refreshing flavor, haha. The noodles kept their chewiness too — really enjoyed it.

Sushi Hwa's 38,000 won flame-seared sushi set: garlic sauce vs spicy sauce
Sushi Hwa's signature dish is the Gimhae Sushi Hwa flame-seared sushi set (₩38,000). If you're normally sensitive to the fishy taste of raw fish, or if you love the savory richness of lightly seared salmon or beef sushi, this is a must-try!

The set comes with two sauce options, garlic and spicy, so it's fun to pick your favorite or compare the two side by side.

The garlic sauce is a textbook sweet-salty-savory combo. The subtle garlic aroma and smooth, savory sauce pair perfectly with the flame-seared flavor (⸝⸝⍢⸝⸝) ෆ

The spicy sauce cuts right through any richness. It's a sharp, spicy house-made sauce — might be a bit much for the spice-shy though...?

It keeps what could get greasy tasting clean and never boring! Going half-and-half with both sauces meant getting the savory and the spicy at the same time, which was perfect for a food lover like me ᐝ (๑⃙⃘´༥`๑⃙⃘)

Flame-seared salmon and beef sushi at Sushi Hwa
The salmon sushi is only lightly torched on the surface, maximizing that rich, fatty flavor..! It melts softly in your mouth.

The beef flame-seared sushi isn't dry at all — soft and tender with every bite. Each chew brought out the juices and the sweet, smooth flavor of the special sauce, blending beautifully with the smoky char.
The sleeper hits: egg sushi and inari sushi
And honestly, the inari (fried tofu pouch) sushi and egg sushi were the real hidden gems! The egg sushi is sweet and fluffy, with a touch of flame char and sauce on top giving it a genuinely luxurious flavor, and the inari sushi has that sweet-salty taste everyone from kids to grandparents would love. Adding a touch of that flame flavor even to the basic sushi lineup, beyond just the beef and seafood, made everything look and taste perfect.
Final verdict: who should eat at Sushi Hwa in Gimhae?
- ✔️ Anyone who loves smoky aburi-style sushi
- ✔️ Anyone who can't eat raw fish
- ✔️ Anyone looking for a good date spot on Bongridan-gil
Definitely try this Bongridan-gil sushi restaurant if you want to experience the essence of flame-seared flavor! It's a satisfying, filling meal, and the clean, casual atmosphere makes for a great time overall ( › ̫ ‹ )✩˚ 。◌
