Mokdong gopchang restaurant, potatoes grilled in gopchang fat: Omokgyo

In short

Omokgyo Gopchang Mokdong Main Branch is a 30-year-old beef gopchang (beef intestine) specialist near Omokgyo Station in Yangcheon, Seoul, grilling beef offal butchered the same day. The writer took a terrace outdoor-tent seat, watched the fire show over the traditional handmade garlic gopchang for two, limited to 30 servings a day, and ate potato slices grilled in the gopchang fat at the edge of the grill along with extra orders of daechang (beef large intestine) and hwangso gopchang. For outdoor-tent atmosphere plus those gopchang-fat potatoes, Omokgyo Gopchang is the answer.

The free spicy sundubu-jjigae and side dishes

As soon as you sit down, Omokgyo Gopchang sets out a complimentary spicy sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew). Pure spicy heat!

Even though it's a free service item, they don't skimp — it's made deep and spicy with a special seasoning paste. Take one sip of the bubbling broth and it instantly calls for soju 🍶 It's the perfect thing to sip on with a drink before the main gopchang comes out pre-seared!

Before the main gopchang arrives, the table fills up with a generous spread of side dishes.

The chive salad, freshly mixed to order with their special seasoning paste, also gets grilled golden alongside the gopchang.

The fresh cheonyeop (beef omasum) is from top-grade Korean beef slaughtered that day, so it's crisp and fresh with no gamey smell.

The scallion kimchi, made fresh every Friday, tastes insanely good grilled together in the gopchang fat!

Dab a little of the house-made shiitake wasabi sauce on and dip it in the spicy sauce — all the greasiness disappears completely.

30 years of tradition and the tableside fire show

📌 There are a few points at Omokgyo Gopchang where you can really feel the owner's exceptional pride! First, an insistence on top-grade domestic Korean beef slaughtered the same day. They only use fresh gopchang from beef slaughtered that day, so quality is consistently fresh.

When the gopchang arrives at the table, the owner puts on a spectacular fire show right in front of you — the flames shoot up, removing any gamey smell and infusing the gopchang with smoky flavor 🔥 It's eye-catching, fun, and perfect for filming an Instagram video!

Traditional handmade garlic gopchang for two, 30 servings a day

We ordered two servings of this restaurant's signature dish, the traditional handmade garlic gopchang, limited to 30 servings a day! It's handmade garlic gopchang packed with Seosan six-clove garlic, a signature born from the hands of a 30-year master. They apparently stuff the garlic in one by one, which is why only a limited quantity is sold each day.

With a sizzling, savory aroma, the grill filled up with golden-grilled garlic gopchang, chives, bean sprouts, potato, and heart — the visual alone was eye-catching 😱🔥

Window-side terrace: outdoor-tent seating in Mokdong

🏕️ The moment I walked into Omokgyo Gopchang, the open, terrace-like window seats immediately caught my eye! In this kind of cool weather, sitting by the terrace listening to gopchang sizzle...😍 Add a glass of soju and I was already getting drunk on the atmosphere before anything else.

With the retro sign reading 'For when you're craving daytime drinks,' there's really no better outdoor-tent-style restaurant in Mokdong for the vibe!

I picked up a well-cooked piece of garlic gopchang with my chopsticks, dipped it lightly in sesame oil salt sauce, and took a bite... genuinely amazing ㅠㅠ

The outside is golden and crispy while the inside is packed with Seosan six-clove garlic and savory gopchang fat, exploding with umami in your mouth!

There's zero gamey or fishy taste, and the garlic makes it even more savory. Not greasy at all, so you keep eating more.

The dish not to miss: potato slices grilled in gopchang fat

⭐️ There's an absolutely insane delicacy you must not skip at Omokgyo Gopchang: potato fried in gopchang fat! Sliced potato soaks up rich, savory beef gopchang fat at the corner of the grill and turns golden — take one bite and...

Sliced potato fried in gopchang fat

The outside is as crispy as a chip while the inside is moist and fluffy — genuinely insane 😭 It's the essence of savory flavor, delicious eaten alongside the gopchang and an absolute top-tier soju pairing!

Crispy fried potato with a piece of gopchang

Bite into a nicely browned piece of gopchang and the chewy, crispy outer skin gives way to rich, savory gopchang fat and the sweet flavor of caramelized Seosan six-clove garlic, blending together smoothly.

Adding daechang and hwangso gopchang to the grill

As we devoured the garlic gopchang, the soju kept flowing and there was no way we could stop there, so we ordered extra daechang (beef small intestine) and hwangso gopchang!

Extra order of daechang and hwangso gopchang

The plump daechang, bursting with savory flavor, was grilled golden and crisp on the outside while the inside stayed juicy and bursting, and the hwangso gopchang — being domestic beef slaughtered same-day — had no gamey smell and was packed with fat, letting us taste the essence of original beef gopchang!

The outdoor-tent-style atmosphere, the spectacular fire show, the signature garlic gopchang, and the extra daechang and Korean beef gopchang — everything about this restaurant was perfect, without a single miss.
