Mokdong Chinese restaurant near Omokgyo: Yugwanjang Banjeom

In short

Yugwanjang Banjeom Omokgyo Station Branch is a Chinese restaurant on the second floor across from Hyundai Department Store in Mokdong, Seoul. I tried jjajangmyeon, eggplant rice bowl, and seafood jjamppong; the tender eggplant rice bowl stood out, though it was a little spicy for me.

I visited the newly opened Yugwanjang Banjeom (유관장반점) Omokgyo Station Branch. It was easy to find because it is right in front of Omokgyo Station, across from Hyundai Department Store. The address is 256 Mokdongdong-ro, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, and the restaurant is on the second floor.

Is it good for a family meal or gathering with children?

I had been looking for a Chinese restaurant near Omokgyo Station where I could comfortably go with children, and the clean interior caught my eye first. When I visited, the restaurant felt pleasant and comfortable inside.

Green trees were visible through the second-floor windows, so the space did not feel closed in. The open view also put me in a good mood while I was eating.

There were also group seats arranged in room-style spaces. I thought it would be a good place to come later with other parents from my children's school and have a meal while talking together.

We ordered jjajangmyeon (noodles in black bean sauce), an eggplant rice bowl, and seafood jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup).

How did the jjajangmyeon and eggplant rice bowl taste?

When the food arrived, I tried the jjajangmyeon first. The noodles were chewy, and the chunjang black bean sauce was rich and savory. To me, it had the deep flavor of the sauce rather than an artificial sweetness or overly intense seasoning, which brought old-fashioned jjajangmyeon to mind.

The eggplant rice bowl was the dish I had been looking forward to most. The eggplant softened easily in my mouth, and the sweet-and-spicy sauce had soaked all the way through.

However, it was a little spicy for me because I do not handle spicy food very well. Even so, the sauce and eggplant went well together, so I mixed them with the rice and finished the whole dish. Of everything I ate this time, the eggplant rice bowl was the most memorable.

What was the seafood jjamppong broth like?

Finally, I tried the seafood jjamppong. The broth, based on beef-bone stock, tasted rich to me without feeling heavy or overly intense. There was also a generous amount of seafood, which added more flavor to the broth.
