Smoke-free offal BBQ and kimchi noodle soup in Dangsan: Chodaechang
In short
Chodaechang Dangsan Station is a beef offal BBQ restaurant on the second floor right in front of Exit 11 of Dangsan Station in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. The writer and her husband ordered Assorted Grill Set A, one portion of gopchang (grilled beef intestines), kimchi noodle soup and somaek (beer and soju), and the staff charcoal-grilled everything, so the daechang came out crisp outside and tender inside while the gopchang stayed chewy with no gamey smell. Strong ventilation meant almost no smoke smell clung to their clothes, making Chodaechang easy for a date or a casual night of drinks.

There are so many good restaurants around Dangsan Station. I had an errand in the area this time, and while looking for somewhere to eat, I found out there was a place listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey 2024! My husband said he wanted gopchang after a long time, so we ended up at Chodaechang Dangsan.
When I searched for reviews, I couldn't find a single bad one..? Beyond being delicious, people said their clothes barely smelled afterward. It had also been featured on the TV show Live Today, so my expectations shot up. Turns out they've specialized only in yang and daechang (beef offal) for 11 years, and sure enough, there was a steady line of customers!

Where is Chodaechang Dangsan Station? Second floor, right at Exit 11
Chodaechang Dangsan Station is on the 2nd floor of the building with Olive Young, right after you exit Dangsan Station's Exit 11! It's right at the exit, so it's easy to find.

Why your clothes don't smell after eating gopchang at Chodaechang
Once you hear a place was listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey, your expectations go up, right? (I'm one of those people who loves these kinds of certifications..) We went up with high hopes, and unlike the interior you usually picture at a gopchang restaurant — you know, that crowded round-table vibe — this place was way classier and cleaner.

I also always thought smelling like oil and smoke was just a given at gopchang restaurants, but the ventilation system here was so good that we barely smelled anything on our clothes when we left. The tables were spaced out generously and the lighting was soft, so it worked well both as a date spot and just a comfortable place to grab a drink!

Ordering Assorted Grill Set A and kimchi noodle soup
We started off ordering Assorted Grill Set A and kimchi-noodle soup! + We ordered more later.

They set up the charcoal grill and basic side dishes, and as expected, my charcoal-loving husband was already satisfied haha. There was some kind of potato salad in the middle?? That was so good ㅠㅠ

Staff charcoal-grill every cut for you at the table
After we ordered, a staff member grilled everything for us, so we just had to eat — so convenient. If you've ever grilled gopchang yourself, you know that if you miss the timing it can turn tough or stay undercooked inside, but here we never had to worry about that at all.

How the daechang, teuk-yang and gopchang tasted
Grilling over charcoal seems to kill any gamey smell entirely, and it brings out a really nutty aroma! The daechang (grilled beef large intestine) was so so so x100 good ㅠ. It's a really plump cut that can easily turn greasy and heavy on the stomach, but here the fat rendered off well over the charcoal so it came out crispy outside and tender inside. My husband normally doesn't like daechang because he finds it greasy, but this had no greasiness at all, just nuttiness, and he kept reaching for more haha.

It was my first time trying teuk-yang (premium beef tripe), and it was tasty — kind of reminded me of galbi?

We also ordered a separate portion of gopchang~ It had no off smell at all and was wonderfully chewy, and grilling it together with garlic and cheongyang chili made the flavor even better. My husband ranked gopchang his number one, and I ranked daechang mine. We decided that next time, we'll just order those two and eat as much as we want.

We finished it off refreshingly with the kimchi-noodle soup! The staff were also kind, so we had a really enjoyable meal.

Is beef offal BBQ at Chodaechang affordable?
Yang and daechang usually run on the pricier side, but this place has its own livestock distribution line, which apparently keeps their unit costs down. Maybe that's why we could eat without feeling too burdened, compared to other places. They also have a spicy option, so next time I'm going to try the spicy yang and daechang!

Between Assorted Grill Set A, one portion of gopchang, kimchi-noodle soup, and somaek, the two of us ate until we were completely full, and the bill wasn't burdensome at all. It's a great place for drinks and anju (drinking snacks), or just a casual dinner. I think it'd also be a great spot to bring a friend who's never tried daechang or gopchang before haha.
For anyone looking for a good meat restaurant near Dangsan Station, I'd recommend Chodaechang Dangsan. A clean space with no smell worries, plus the comfort of having staff grill everything for you — it works well as a date course or just a relaxed drinking spot~~
