Solo lunch at a Sangam pot rice restaurant: double-meat steak, Solsot

In short

Solsot Sangam Branch is a Korean pot rice (sotbap) restaurant on Maebongsan-ro near Digital Media City Station in Mapo, Seoul. Eating alone on a weekday lunch with a Naver reservation, the writer ordered the steak pot rice with a double meat add-on and ended up with more meat than rice, then finished the meal with nurungji (scorched rice) made from the restaurant's special broth. With 1 hour of parking support and an easy setup for solo diners, Solsot Sangam Branch is a place the writer plans to return to regularly.

Eating alone at lunch in Sangam: why the writer went back to Solsot

Places you once ate well at have a strange way of coming back to mind. So this was a revisit to Solsot Sangam Branch, a Sangam restaurant good for lunch and family gatherings! Even dining alone, everything comes out arranged neatly as a single set, making it a stress-free pick when looking for solo dining options in Sangam.

Entrance of Solsot Sangam Branch during weekday lunch hour

Last time I came on what I think was a Saturday or Sunday, but coming on a weekday, the place was packed, true to Sangam's reputation as an office worker's mecca. I spotted a few fellow solo diners too. Pot rice really is unbeatable for eating alone.

How much food is steak pot rice with double meat?

This time I ordered Solsot Sangam Branch's steak pot rice with double meat added. Last visit I had salmon pot rice, but this time I was really craving meat, so I went with steak pot rice.

But just plain steak pot rice felt a little underwhelming, didn't it...? Enjoy it, you overworked slave who toiled right up to your day off. Or really, I'd just been so hungry lately that since I was eating anyway, I decided to flex and added double the steak.

At this Sangam restaurant good for lunch and family gatherings, the side dishes change depending on the pot rice's ingredient concept, which is honestly one of the fun points.

Inside the pot: steak pot rice with double meat added

Personally, I found the steak pot rice much tastier than the salmon I had last time. The moment the steak pot rice arrived, the first thing that caught my eye was, of course, the amount of meat. Double add-on is no joke! It was half rice, half meat — actually a bit more meat than rice. Steak piled on generously. Is this what happiness feels like.

It was also great that the steak wasn't overcooked. Cooked right at medium to medium-well, exactly my style. You could taste the meaty aroma along with the deep savoriness of the meat.

There's a sauce served alongside, but I'm a dipper, not a pourer, so I dipped it, and since the meat and rice were already seasoned, I didn't need much sauce anyway. First I scooped a big spoonful of the half rice, half meat mix into the small side bowl and dug in.

How to finish the pot rice with special broth nurungji

As always, the real fun of Solsot is the scorched rice (nurungji) you make at the end with the leftover rice. You pour the special broth that comes with the meal into the stone pot, close the lid again, and let the scorched rice form.

Because it's not just any broth but a special one, the savoriness explodes, and with the meat's juices mixing in too, you get a scorched rice finish that's deeply savory and nutty. Hmm, am I the only one thinking this would also make a great hangover cure?

After eating a generous amount of steak and rice, finishing with warm scorched rice on top. I sent a photo to my boyfriend and he went wild saying he wanted it more than me... This visit was meant to try a different menu item from last time, and it was a total success — I feel like I'll become a regular.

Is Solsot Sangam Branch worth a return visit?

Hehe, cleaned up the kimchi too. Adding extra meat, no big deal, hehehe. Ate so well I think my blood sugar spiked immediately, haha.

Parking's free for an hour, it's close to home, and it's great for solo dining, so I plan to visit again.
