I visited MELA, an all-day brunch café on the first floor of Nudit Hongdae, a mixed-use cultural space.

Driving to MELA Hongdae: how does parking work?
Nudit Hongdae, where MELA Hongdae is located, has a spacious underground self-parking lot (Two Parking), making it an ideal spot to visit by car. It's tucked behind the busy Exit 1 of Hongik University Station, on a tidy line of homes and offices in Seoyo-dong, so the surroundings felt calm and well-kept.

If you register your license plate at checkout, you get 1 hour of free parking, so you can start your meal at ease even in notoriously parking-scarce Hongdae.

MELA Hongdae's exterior and opening hours
From the outside, MELA Hongdae's warm wood wall panels and mint green arched window frames blend together beautifully, giving off the feel of a bakery down a European alley. On the entrance signboard, chalk handwriting announces a 9 a.m. opening and 6:30 p.m. closing (last order 18:00), and that handwritten touch already put me in a good mood.

Inside MELA Hongdae: a European lounge feel
The moment I stepped in, a grand, glistening spherical crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling caught my eye. Natural light poured softly in through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and the tables were spaced generously apart — it looked perfect for a weekend brunch gathering or a quiet date.

Butter-yellow walls, elegant antique wood frames, vintage-patterned tile floors, and a heavy solid-wood long table in the center — the whole space had a cozy European lounge feel. (Actually, the floor right above is Local Stitch Seogyo, long-term stay lodging for foreigners, so there were quite a few foreign guests too.) It seems to have become a bit of a word-of-mouth favorite among foreigners in Seoyo-dong.

The bakery showcase at MELA Hongdae
Next to the order counter, the showcase displayed a tempting bakery lineup. Flaky croissants with visible layers, pain au chocolat, apple custard pie, and lemon and chocolate malenka were all on offer, making it a great spot to linger for dessert as well as brunch.

What we ordered at MELA Hongdae and what it cost
On this visit, we ordered

MELA's signature salmon eggs Benedict (₩22,000), a fragrant minari (water dropwort) vongole pasta made with seasonal greens (₩23,000), and a house-made lemonade (₩7,500) for a refreshing finish.

Salmon eggs Benedict, 22,000 won
The salmon eggs Benedict came piled high with toppings. On a crisp, double-layered slice of sourdough, smoked salmon and spinach were stacked generously, topped with a plump soft-boiled egg and a generous drizzle of creamy hollandaise sauce. Thinly sliced red onion, sesame seeds, and chili flakes finished off the plating.

Popping the soft-boiled egg with a knife and taking a bite with the rich yolk, tangy-savory sauce, and tender smoked salmon all at once, my mouth filled with deep, hearty flavor. The fresh side salad and sweet-and-tangy carrot rapée that came with it cleanly balanced out what could have otherwise felt heavy.

Minari (water dropwort) vongole pasta, 23,000 won
The vongole pasta arrived as linguine piled generously with large, fresh clams and surf clams, topped with a heap of vivid green fresh minari (water dropwort). Squeezing the accompanying lemon wedge and mixing it into the oil sauce brought out a natural, refreshing minari aroma woven between the subtle garlic, the deep umami of the clams, and the nutty olive oil.

The pasta was cooked to a nicely springy al dente, and the crunch of the minari paired with the chewy clam meat kept every last strand enjoyable to the end. It was my first time trying minari and vongole together, and I think it's a pretty tasty combination.

House-made lemonade, 7,500 won
The house-made lemonade came with fresh lemon slices and mint floating on top, giving it a refreshing look. Instead of artificial syrupy sweetness, it had bright natural lemon tartness and lively carbonation, making it a great pairing with the brunch dishes.
Is MELA Hongdae worth a drive for brunch?
Neat plating, thoughtful ingredient pairings, an exotic yet calm interior, and convenient parking support — everything came together harmoniously on this visit. I'd recommend it without hesitation to anyone who wants a polished, European-style brunch in a comfortable atmosphere.
