Today I visited Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch, a restaurant near Ajou University 💕 I was out near Ajou University and stopped by — turns out it's a hot spot for gyudon sets and char siu don sets! 🔥 We ordered the char siu don set and fell for it 😍 The char siu had amazing smoky flavor, the set was generous, and it even came with soba, so it was seriously delicious 🤤

It's on the restaurant alley near Ajou University, so it's easy to find! There's a wooden sign that says "Gyudongjip" clearly, so I found it right away ☺️ There's a standing menu board out front, so you can decide before going in haha. I visited a bit after lunch hour and it was nearly full, but there was no wait 👍
Shin-chan decor and bar seats for solo diners
The inside of Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch was cozy and clean ✨️ There are tables for 2 and for 4, plus bar seats good for eating alone, so I saw a lot of solo diners at lunchtime 🥄 The real point here is Shin-chan lol 😍 Shin-chan on the walls, Shin-chan dolls on the tables 😆 There's even a projector on the wall showing notices, and that's Shin-chan too, so cute I kept watching it haha.

Prices range from ₩7,000s to ₩12,000s, so it's great value for a lunch near Ajou University 😁 There are separate sides too — karaage, fried shrimp, sweet potato cheese croquette, extra char siu, extra poached egg 🥩🥚 Each table has a tablet you order straight from 📱 The categories were split into set menus / single items / curry / soba & udon / sides / drinks, which made it easy 👍
After some debate we ordered the char siu set (₩12,500). It had both BEST and NEW tags on it, so there was no way we weren't ordering it lol.
What comes with the 12,500 won char siu set
The char siu set includes⬇️ char siu don + mini noodles (your choice) + salad + karai sauce + pickled ginger + wasabi + plum tea. For the noodles you can choose mini udon / mini soba / mini cold udon, and I went with mini soba 🍜 It comes beautifully arranged on a tray 😍 The dishware is cute and dainty too haha.
The char siu don looks amazing too! And tastes even better 👍 The char siu, coated properly in smoky flavor, fills the bowl 🤩 Torch-seared on the outside for full smoky aroma, soft and moist on the inside 🤤 Even the fatty parts aren't greasy, they go down with a nice nutty savoriness.
Take a big spoonful of rice, char siu, and onion together and it's really so good — mixed with the spicy karai sauce it's got the best umami, the karai sauce is a total standout 🌶 It's good with the pickled radish too 😋 The sign said the char siu is always weighed to the exact portion, and maybe that's why the amount felt really generous.
The char siu is delicious on its own, and the seasoning soaks into the rice nicely so it's great mixed in too haha.
The eating tips posted on the restaurant wall
- 🍚 Gyudon → mix in the poached egg, add karai sauce little by little for extra umami (it's spicy, so go slow!)
- 🥩 Yukhoe don → mix in the special sauce and wrap it in seaweed
- Pickled ginger, pickled radish, rice, and sauce — just ask and they'll give you more 👍
How the mini soba and side dishes tasted
The mini soba exceeded expectations too 🙌 The broth was rich and completely addictive 🤩 The broth was cool and refreshing 🧊, the buckwheat aroma was alive, and the noodles had good chew 👏 Alternating bites between the char siu don and the soba was a great balance. The salad was cabbage with sesame dressing, nutty and easy to keep eating 😍 The side dishes included pickled radish, kimchi, and seasoned mustard greens, plus plum tea for dessert. Such a generous set 💕
Is Gyudongjip Ajou University Branch worth a lunch trip?
