Changwon Garosu-gil Korean BBQ where staff grill for you: Godansu

In short

Godansu Changwon Yongho Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in the basement of a building on Garosu-gil in Changwon, where staff cut and grill the samgyeopsal (pork belly) and mokssal (pork neck) at your table. Two servings of samgyeopsal and one of mokssal (13,000 won each) came with yeondubu doenjang jjigae (soft tofu soybean paste stew, 7,000 won), rice (1,000 won) and six different sauces. Parking at Godansu was no trouble either, with 2-3 spaces in the alley or in front of the restaurant plus the nearby community service center.

Where is Godansu Changwon Yongho Branch? Location, parking and hours

Today I'm introducing one of the great atmosphere-filled meat restaurants on Garosu-gil in Changwon, 'Godansu Changwon Yongho Branch.' The address is 18 Chang-i-daero 464beon-gil, Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, basement level, and it's open 17:00–23:00, closed every Monday.

Ordering two servings of samgyeopsal and one of mokssal: side dishes and six sauces

For meat, the first order requires a minimum of 3 servings, so we ordered 2 servings of samgyeopsal and 1 of mokssal.

  • Samgyeopsal (pork belly): ₩13,000
  • Mokssal (pork neck): ₩13,000

After ordering, the side dishes that came out were cucumber peppers and pickles, gat kimchi (mustard leaf kimchi), baek kimchi (white kimchi), and konjac salad.

For the sauces, the staff member explained each one to us — the fresh wasabi, basil pesto, and galchi sokjeot (fermented hairtail intestine sauce) had sansho pepper added for extra tang, and the squid jeotgal (fermented seafood) and special gochujang had pineapple added to make them even tastier.

And chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg custard) came out too, along with a lettuce salad.

The chawanmushi was really soft and delicious for a pre-meal bite, and the other side dishes were tasty too.

While we were eating the side dishes, the meat arrived, and it looked so good — the staff member put it right on the grill for us.

They cut the meat into easy-to-eat pieces and grilled it for us, so it was so nice to just wait comfortably.

They gave us a well-cooked piece of samgyeopsal, and for the first bite we dipped it in finely ground salt — the juices burst out and it was really delicious.

This time we ate it with chives and the special gochujang together, and the pairing was really great — the mokssal was soft and good.

The staff also set the meat so it wouldn't burn and would stay warm while eating.

The myeoljeot (fermented anchovy sauce) had no fishy taste and had sansho pepper adding tang, making it even tastier, and the peppers weren't spicy, which was nice.

The fresh wasabi was the best pairing with the meat, and the squid jeotgal also went well with the rich, fatty taste of the meat.

Ending the meal with soft tofu doenjang jjigae and rice

We also grilled whole garlic cloves, which were even tastier, and after eating a fair amount we ordered the yeondubu doenjang jjigae and rice.

  • Yeondubu doenjang jjigae (soft tofu soybean paste stew): ₩7,000
  • Rice: ₩1,000

The rice came out first, and it was about 1.5 times the portion of a regular restaurant's rice, which was great, and the soft tofu stew looked amazing too.

Inside there was soft tofu and pieces of meat, and the broth was refreshing yet spicy, so it would probably be great as a drinking side dish too.

Eating it together with rice was such a great match — it cut through all the greasiness from the meat, and it was really delicious.
