What kind of restaurant is Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch?

Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch is a Korean restaurant in Jincheon-dong, Dalseo-gu, Daegu, centered on wood-fired grilled mackerel and pot rice. When you're looking for a place to eat with family in Daegu, the menu lineup matters, but you also end up looking for a Korean restaurant that serves its banchan (side dishes) neatly and well. This visit was to exactly that kind of place — Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch.

It's also fairly close to Wolseong-dong, so it's worth looking into together when searching for a hanjeongsik (Korean set meal) restaurant near Wolseong-dong. Centered on grilled mackerel, it's a place where you can enjoy pot rice and various banchan as one full spread, so it fit well as a place to eat with parents, for a family meal out, or for a group gathering.

Inside Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch: private rooms and group tables

Going up to the 3rd floor and stepping inside, the space felt bigger than expected, giving a relaxed first impression. Overall it was neatly arranged, and the tables had fairly generous spacing between them, so the surroundings never felt crowded during the meal.

What especially caught my eye was that there's room-style seating and group seating, so families can eat comfortably. When eating with parents or having a family gathering, the food matters, but this kind of seating arrangement quietly matters too.

Separate from the open seating area, there are seats where you can use a divided space, which looked good for visiting as a group.

A full Korean table: what comes with the Geumdeungeo set meal

As the name suggests, the centerpiece of Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch's menu is grilled mackerel. The signature Geumdeungeo set is known for pairing wood-fired grilled mackerel with pot rice and a variety of banchan.

The mackerel is grilled golden-brown on the outside while staying moist inside, so it goes well with rice. Especially in a Korean meal, having pot rice and several banchan served together — rather than just a single grilled fish — made the meal feel properly complete.

With the pot rice, you can scoop out the rice to eat and then pour hot water in to finish with nurungji (scorched rice) or sungnyung (scorched rice tea), so you can take your time and enjoy it right through to the end of the meal.

What we ordered: mackerel pot rice set and spicy pork pot rice set

This time I ordered the Geumdeungeo pot rice set and the braised pork (jeyuk-bokkeum) pot rice set. To go with them, I also ordered the flounder-style meat jeon (pan-fried meat pancake) and cockle salad.

As the dishes started coming out one by one, the table quickly filled up into a full Korean spread. With the pot rice sets and various banchan all served together, it really felt like a proper full meal.

Geumdeungeo mackerel pot rice set

I started with the Geumdeungeo pot rice set. True to its name, grilled mackerel comes out as the main, and the golden-brown grilled mackerel paired well with the rice, as expected.

The grilled fish was good flaked off and placed on top of the rice, and it was also good to eat slowly alongside the banchan one by one. In particular, the pot rice had that warm freshly-cooked feel, so the rice's flavor came through even more strongly when eaten with the grilled mackerel.

After eating some of the rice, I could also enjoy the nurungji left at the bottom of the pot, which made the meal feel hearty right to the end. With grilled mackerel, pot rice, and various banchan all together, this was a menu that's easy to enjoy if you like home-style Korean cooking.

Spicy stir-fried pork (jeyuk-bokkeum) pot rice set

The second menu I ordered was the braised pork (jeyuk-bokkeum) pot rice set. Jeyuk-bokkeum is a classic Korean dish that goes well with rice, so it was a great match served as a pot rice set.

Eating the well-seasoned braised pork with the warm pot rice made me keep reaching for more rice. Rather than just eating the meat, alternating between it and the various banchan made the advantages of a full spread even clearer.

I also liked that people who prefer grilled fish can choose the Geumdeungeo pot rice set, while those who prefer meat can go with the braised pork pot rice set. It also worked well for people visiting together to order different menus and share.

Neopttigi beef jeon and seasoned cockles on the side

It felt like a shame to order just the pot rice sets, so I also ordered the flounder-style meat jeon and cockle salad as sides. The flounder-style meat jeon was a menu of flat pan-fried meat pancake, sliced up to eat.

Eating the soft jeon with soy sauce seasoning went well as a light banchan too. Paired with the warm pot rice, the jeon's savory flavor came through even more.

The cockle salad was mixed with seasoning, so it went well alongside the rice. The chewy cockles combined with the seasoning's flavor served as a nice change of pace between bites of the mild pot rice.

Between the grilled mackerel of the Geumdeungeo pot rice set, the braised pork of the jeyuk-bokkeum pot rice set, and the flounder-style meat jeon and cockle salad, ordering several menus together let us enjoy a wide range of Korean banchan and mains.

Self-serve banchan bar with seasoned vegetables and japchae

Another thing that stood out at Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch was the banchan setup. Besides the basic table spread, there's a self-serve banchan bar inside the restaurant, so you can go help yourself to more if anything runs short.

When visiting a Korean restaurant, the main dish matters, but how good the banchan eaten with the rice is really changes how satisfying the meal feels. There were seasoned vegetables, salads, japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), kimchi and more prepared, good banchan to pair with rice, and I liked being able to taste a little of many things.

The banchan selection may vary depending on when you visit, but overall it leaned toward clean, classic Korean banchan that paired well with the grilled mackerel too.

Homemade banchan to go and Chuseok banchan gift sets

🥢At Geumdeungeo, they sell homemade banchan in addition to the in-restaurant meal, so I liked that you can take home any banchan you liked to pack up.

With Chuseok approaching, they're also selling banchan gift sets, which was good to check out when preparing holiday food or gifts.

  • ✔️Banchan eaten in the restaurant can be packed to go
  • ✔️Homemade banchan for sale
  • ✔️Chuseok banchan gift sets available
  • ✔️Handle both the meal and banchan shopping in one visit

A nice feature is being able to prepare everyday banchan for home alongside gift-set banchan for the holiday. If you're thinking of a banchan set as a Chuseok gift, it's worth checking the lineup and availability before visiting.

Why Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch suits a family meal in Daegu

If you're looking for a hanjeongsik or a clean Korean restaurant in Dalseo-gu, Daegu, Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch is worth checking out. Final verdict on Geumdeungeo Dalseo Branch

The Geumdeungeo pot rice set and braised pork pot rice set I tried this time offered a choice between grilled fish and braised pork, and adding the flounder-style meat jeon and cockle salad on top let us enjoy several Korean dishes all at once.

The combination of pot rice with banchan suited a family meal or dining out with parents well, and I also remember that they sell banchan and run Chuseok banchan gift sets.

If you're searching for a hanjeongsik restaurant in Daegu, Wolseong-dong, or Dalseo-gu and prefer familiar Korean dishes like pot rice, grilled fish, and braised pork, it's worth looking at the menu lineup and paying a visit.

※ I'd recommend double-checking with the restaurant about the Chuseok holiday closure schedule before visiting.
