Changwon pork BBQ restaurant with crab soybean paste stew: Jeju Doldam
In short
Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Sangnam-dong, Changwon, where Jeju black pork oegyeopsal (five-layer pork belly) is kept in an aging fridge and grilled tableside by the staff. Visiting as a pair, the writer ordered raw Jeju black pork oegyeopsal and added a crab soybean paste stew with two whole crabs, on top of the complimentary kimchi jjigae and kimchi fried in pork fat. With the meat, the stews and the side dishes all clearly cared for, Jeju Doldam is a solid pick for a Sangnam-dong work dinner or group gathering.

I was looking for a place to eat meat in Sangnam-dong, Changwon, and ended up at Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch. The name itself has that Jeju vibe, and even before stepping inside I already felt like I'd been transported to Jeju Island, haha, which was fun.

Inside Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch: the entrance and the pork aging fridge
Right at the entrance of Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch stands a dol hareubang (stone grandfather statue), so it made for a good photo spot before even going in. True to a restaurant specializing in Jeju black pork, there's a dedicated aging room for the pork inside. Seeing the aging room with my own eyes gave me confidence that they take proper care of the meat, so my expectations were already up before I even ate.

When I visited, there were a lot of group customers in as well. I watched the owner handling the groups, and he was so upbeat and good at leading the vibe that I thought this place would be comfortable for a work dinner or group gathering too.

Raw Jeju black pork oegyeopsal: the crisp skin layer is the point
What we ordered that day was the raw Jeju black pork belly (oegyeopsal).

Maybe because it had been properly aged in the aging room, the color of the meat looked distinctly fresh. Putting the pinkish meat on the grill, the sizzling visual alone was enough to make my mouth water.

The pork belly grilled over the charcoal picked up a subtle smoky flavor while keeping its own deep meaty taste alive. Since Jeju Doldam grills the meat for you, I didn't have to worry about the grilling at all while eating, which was nice.

In particular, the belly still had the skin attached, so the tenderness of the meat combined with the chewy texture of the skin made for a really satisfying bite.

How the meljeot, galchisokjeot and mayo ssamjang compare
It's delicious even plain, but Jeju black pork really is best dipped in Jeju meljeot (fermented anchovy sauce). They prepare it boiled, and dipping the meat in deeply gives it a salty, savory kick that keeps you reaching for more.

At Jeju Doldam you can also enjoy galchisokjeot (salted hairtail intestines) and mayo ssamjang alongside, so there's the fun of trying a different combination with each bite of meat.
The complimentary kimchi jjigae at Jeju Doldam stands out
When the free stew at a Korean BBQ place is actually good, it just puts you in a good mood, right?

Here, kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) comes as a default side, and after tasting it I could tell this place puts real effort even into the basic side dishes. I took a spoonful before eating the meat, and the stew itself was so good that I kept eating it alongside the meat throughout the meal.
Is the crab soybean paste stew worth adding?
I'm a fan of soybean paste stew at Korean BBQ places, so I added the doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) at Jeju Doldam too. I really want to recommend this one.

It's a crab soybean paste stew with two big crabs in it, so the broth had a properly refreshing, savory depth. Taking a spoonful of the hot, clean-tasting stew in between bites of meat cut through the richness and made for a satisfying finish to the meal.
With the crab soybean paste stew and scorched rice (nurungji) combo, satisfaction levels were high, haha.

Side dishes that show real care
Another thing I liked about Jeju Doldam was the banchan (side dishes).

In particular, instead of plain fresh kimchi, they served kimchi stir-fried in pork fat, and eating it together with the meat was a really good match. At some Korean BBQ places, only the meat is good and the side dishes are just an afterthought, but here it felt like they put thought into every single item that came out as standard.

Alternating the Jeju black pork with meljeot, galchisokjeot, and stir-fried kimchi meant that even though it was the same pork belly, I kept getting a different flavor experience with each bite.
Jeju Doldam as a Sangnam-dong work dinner and group spot
On the day I visited, there really were a lot of group customers, and it was memorable watching the owner handle them all with such a cheerful attitude.

I had a pleasant meal the whole way through, and seeing how naturally the owner handled the group customers made me think this would also be a good spot for a Sangnam-dong work dinner, a gathering with friends, or a family meal out. Since the staff grill the meat for you, that's also a plus when visiting with a larger group, since no one person has to be stuck grilling the whole time.

I went as a pair this time, but walking out after the meal, I actually thought it would be great to come back with a bigger group next time. You can enjoy Jeju black pork belly right in Sangnam-dong without having to travel all the way to Jeju Island, and with the dol hareubang and Jeju vibe carrying through from the entrance, it was more fun than just coming for the meat.

Above all, I liked the sense that everything — from the meat to the stews to the basic side dishes — was given real attention. If you're in Sangnam-dong, Changwon looking for Jeju black pork belly or a BBQ spot for a group dinner, Jeju Doldam Sangnam Main Branch is worth it. Next time, I'd love to come back with a bigger group.
