Untan Taepyeong: a new briquette-grill restaurant in Taepyeong-dong, Daejeon

Lately I've been hooked on hunting down good meat spots. This time I went to Untan Taepyeong, newly opened in Taepyeong-dong. Cutting to the chase — this place was really good.

Not just 'good' — the kind of taste that kept popping into my head afterward, so it felt like finding a proper meat restaurant after a long time. If you're looking for good restaurants in Taepyeong-dong, Daejeon, this one is worth a visit.

What is on the menu at Untan Taepyeong?

Untan Taepyeong is a briquette grill specialty restaurant with a variety of meat dishes. From the Uiseong garlic marinated short rib to beef skirt and beef hanger steak, plus less common items like chicken neck meat, chicken feet, and grilled cuttlefish — there was a lot on offer.

Inside the modern-retro dining room

The place had a modern-retro vibe — modern but with a touch of retro warmth — so the atmosphere felt good the moment we walked in.

Since it's so newly opened, the whole restaurant was kept really clean. For a meat restaurant, how clean the tables and interior are really matters, and it made a great first impression on that front too.

And when we visited, the dining room was already packed with customers. Even though it hasn't been open long, I thought 'is this place already popular?' — and after eating, I totally understood why.

This is even a place Daejeon's own star Se Ri Pak has visited!! The smoky char from the briquette grilling is the real charm here, so my expectations were sky-high.

Our order: Uiseong garlic short rib for three, naengmyeon and rice

That day we ordered Uiseong garlic short rib (3 servings), naengmyeon, and rice.

Untan has the Uiseong garlic marinated short rib, plus beef skirt, beef hanger steak, chicken neck meat, chicken feet, grilled cuttlefish, and more — so we spent a long time deliberating over the menu. There were more dishes we wanted to try than expected, so it wasn't an easy choice, but in the end we went with the Uiseong garlic short rib. And honestly, that choice turned out great.

Fry as many eggs as you like at the self-serve corner

And here's this place's hidden gem! One thing that surprisingly delighted me at Untan Taepyeong — you can fry as many eggs as you like!

This was my first time frying my own eggs at a meat restaurant, and it was surprisingly fun. It sounds like nothing, but a fried egg you grill yourself just tastes so good! Eating a bite of meat and then a fried egg together was pure bliss. We happily polished off the fried eggs too. With this kind of small fun built in, I think it'd be great for a family meal out, or just a relaxed dinner with friends.

Ella spotted a jjajangmyeon-style dish on the menu and asked me to order it. But since we had naengmyeon to get through, we sadly didn't get to try it!! Though the meat with the naengmyeon was truly legit 🤎

Even though the place was packed that day, the food came out in a steady, well-paced order. And above all, the side dishes were genuinely delicious.

How does the briquette-grilled Uiseong garlic short rib taste?

The moment the meat arrived, it went straight onto the briquette grill. That gentle smoky char you get from briquette grilling was so good, and combined with the Uiseong garlic marinade, the flavor of the meat was on another level. This Uiseong garlic short rib is a real winner!!

After the first bite, we just kept saying 'wow, so good' to each other haha. Genuinely, deeply delicious. The marinade wasn't overly sweet or heavy-handed — it paired really well with the meat, and grilling it over the briquettes seemed to bring out even more flavor.

The short rib sold out right after we ordered

And here's something really funny — while we were happily eating our Uiseong garlic short rib, it turned out the dish had sold out! Apparently right after our order went in, the Uiseong garlic short rib ran out. We were like, 'wow, good thing we ordered when we did!' haha.

The dining room was already full when we visited, and seeing the popular dish sell out too made it clear this is a dish a lot of people are after. If you're searching for good restaurants in Taepyeong-dong, Daejeon and decide to visit, I'd recommend trying the Uiseong garlic short rib like we did. But since it's such a popular item, it's worth checking menu availability when you go!

Mul-naengmyeon and the house garlic sauce

I ordered the mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup in broth) alongside the meat. When it's just me and Ella's dad, it's always bibim-naengmyeon (spicy mixed version), but this time it was a nod to noodle-lover Ella haha.

It came out clean and mild without using mustard or vinegar, which I liked.

A bite of meat, then a bite of noodles — a perfect way to cleanse the palate. The mul-naengmyeon had a bit of seasoning mixed in, which was a nice little kick. Totally my style 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

The meat itself was delicious, but dipping it in this special garlic sauce makes it about a thousand times better. Don't forget to dip, dip, dip!!!

How was the service at Untan Taepyeong?

There was one more thing I really liked about Untan Taepyeong — the staff were so kind! Even though the dining room was packed and they must have been slammed, they served us in a way that felt genuinely friendly and comfortable.

Good food matters, but so does the service when it comes to leaving a restaurant in a good mood. Untan Taepyeong had great food plus friendly service, which made the whole experience even more memorable.
