Evening table spread at Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch

Hi everyone^^ I went over to my sister's place after work, and we decided to eat out for once instead of just having something simple at home. That day I really wanted a proper dinner out, so I headed to the place famous for jokbal (braised pig's trotter) in the Suwan district — Kkankkan Jjokbal.

I visited in the evening, and the atmosphere felt relaxed with plenty of seating, so it looked like a great spot for family or friends.

Where is Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch, and what are its hours?

Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch is at 44 Suwan-ro, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, and it's open daily from 12:00 to 23:30, so you can go even for a late dinner. Parking is available too.

The storefront stands out right away! The phrase on the sign — 'jokbal grilled over charcoal' — really caught my eye. And since the place has earned so much love, it also donates part of its profits. 👍👍👍 There's clearly a reason it's been loved for so long.

The waiting area and seating inside Kkankkan Jjokbal

Once you step inside Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch, there's a dedicated waiting area since there can be a line during peak hours.

Luckily, I went at a slightly off-peak weekday time, so I got seated right away with no wait. The interior is tidy and the tables are spaced generously, and with a fast turnover, the wait doesn't stretch long even at peak times.

Besides the main hall seating, there are also more relaxed seats further inside, which looked great for gatherings or family dinners.

Side dishes: free sundubu jjigae and steamed egg

At Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch, sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) comes free as part of the basic setup, and its spicy warmth pairs really well with the jokbal.

Along with that came wrap vegetables to eat with the jokbal, plus steamed egg and salad on the table.

What we ordered: half-and-half jokbal set and flying fish roe rice balls

I ordered the half-and-half jokbal set and the flying fish roe rice balls. Whenever I come with my nieces and nephews, the rice balls are a must-order — the kids eat them up 😊

Finally, everything we ordered arrived. Eating in person really does give you more generous portions and hotter food than delivery would.

So glossy ❤️ It looked delicious just to see it. My older niece had just finished her workbook lesson before we came for this late dinner, so everyone was starving by then.

How the charcoal-grilled jokbal tasted

First we tried the charcoal-grilled jokbal, full of smoky aroma. The skin was chewy and the meat inside was tender, so the texture was great. A gentle smoky flavor came through too — really delicious.

The jokbal is tasty on its own, but wrapping a piece in lettuce with radish kimchi is really how it should be eaten! The tangy-spicy radish kimchi in particular cuts through the richness of the jokbal, so I kept reaching for more.

How spicy is the fire-grilled spicy jokbal?

What stuck with me most that day was the fire-grilled spicy jokbal. The jokbal, already carrying a subtle smoky aroma, was coated in a fiery-red spicy sauce — it looked hot just from the visual. Take a bite and at first you taste sweetness from the sauce, then the heat builds up as you keep eating, which kept me reaching for more.

It wasn't just spicy — the smoky aroma from the direct-fire grilling and the chewy texture of the jokbal came together, giving it a different appeal from regular jokbal.

Why jaengban guksu (platter noodles) is a must here

Jaengban guksu (platter noodles) is something you shouldn't skip when eating jokbal! It was loaded with vegetables and had a tangy-spicy sauce that paired really well with the jokbal.

Pick up a piece of jokbal together with the jaengban guksu, and the savory, chewy jokbal combines with the spicy-tangy flavor so you never get tired of it. Personally I love this combination, so I almost always order jaengban guksu whenever I eat jokbal 😄

There are dishes kids can eat too, and adults love everything on the menu without exception, so if you're looking for a dinner spot in the Suwan district, or a place for a family meal or a meal with friends, and you like jokbal, it's worth a visit.

The prize draw at the register and the 10,000-won dining voucher

🎁After the meal, there was even an event to join. Kkankkan Jjokbal Suwan Branch has a prize draw at checkout, and what we drew was 4th place! 🎉

Thanks to that, we got a 10,000-won Kkankkan Jjokbal dining voucher. We just came for a good dinner and ended up with an unexpected little gift too — it put me in a great mood haha. There's a cute pig doll on one side of the store along with the event instructions, so it's worth giving it a try after your meal.

Ate delicious jokbal and scored a voucher too! Little moments of fun like this made the dinner even more memorable. 🐷💛 It's usable through next month, so I guess I'll have to come back once more ❤️ Now I've got another chance to eat here again 😉

Free dessert: coffee and ice cream

On the way out, coffee and ice cream were set up as dessert. My nieces and nephews absolutely loved the ice cream.

A dinner that was perfect down to the dessert 👍👍👍 I recommend Kkankkan Jjokbal as a dinner spot in the Suwan district.
