Sangmu, Gwangju pasta restaurant with Titanic-ballroom decor: Bueokgan

These days I'm happiest eating great food in a great-looking space...🙋🏻‍♀️ This time I went with my boyfriend for Sangmu district brunch at Bueokgan Sangmu Branch. I'd been curious about it for a while since I'd heard the interior was pretty, but once I actually went, the atmosphere was even better than I expected. Apparently it's designed with an Italian vintage classic hotel concept inspired by the Titanic's ballroom, and honestly, from the entrance it already felt totally different from a typical Western restaurant.

What the exterior and entrance of Bueokgan Sangmu Branch look like

Bueokgan Sangmu Branch is a Western restaurant located on the 1st floor of 25 Seogwangju-ro, Seo-gu, Gwangju. The exterior already feels like an old restaurant somewhere in Europe! It's the kind of place you'd glance twice at even just passing by, so I was busy taking photos before I'd even walked in.

Inside Bueokgan Sangmu Branch: does it work as a date spot?

Once you step inside, that signature Bueokgan mood comes through even more. It's vintage yet classic overall, and since the lighting, furniture, and props are all unified around the concept, it was genuinely fun just looking around the space.

Every table has such good atmosphere that I thought it'd work well as a date spot. Visit during the day and it's great for Sangmu brunch, and in the evening the lighting probably gives it a totally different mood. It's the kind of place that comes to mind for a blind date or an anniversary — when you want the atmosphere to match the occasion.

What we ordered that day: shrimp anchovy oil pasta, shrimp rosé pasta, and truffle mushroom pizza! It was too hard to pick just one pasta, so we just ordered both the oil and the rosé💗💗 We came for Sangmu pasta, so we figured we should go all in :)

With everything coming out at once, the table looked genuinely gorgeous. Two types of pasta plus a pizza made for a great combo, and it'd also work well for a group visit where everyone orders differently and shares.

Shrimp anchovy oil pasta at Bueokgan Sangmu Branch

First, the shrimp anchovy oil pasta I'd personally been curious about! It has plump shrimp and that distinctive umami of anchovy layered into an oil pasta. Despite being an oil pasta, it wasn't overly rich or greasy — it had a salty, umami-forward flavor that kept me reaching for more. The combination of noodles and shrimp together was especially good. If you usually prefer clean oil pasta over cream or rosé, I'd recommend starting with this one. I've tried a lot of oil pasta hunting down Gwangju pasta restaurants, and the anchovy here gives it a different charm from your standard aglio e olio.

And then the shrimp rosé pasta🫶🏻, which was hard to imagine tasting bad just from the visual. The thick yet smooth rosé sauce with shrimp was a completely different charm from the oil pasta. It had that creamy rosé character without being too heavy, so I kept eating more than I expected. Taking a bite of the anchovy oil pasta and then a bite of rosé, back and forth, was genuinely fun haha. So if there are two or more of you, I'd recommend ordering the oil + rosé combo together rather than picking just one Sangmu pasta dish.

Truffle mushroom pizza at Bueokgan Sangmu Branch

Just pasta alone felt a little lacking, so we also ordered the truffle mushroom pizza! The moment it arrived, the subtle truffle aroma was great and paired well with the mushrooms. Having a slice of pizza in between the two pastas made the menu combination even better.

This one's especially satisfying if you like mushrooms! The truffle aroma and mushroom flavor pair really well, and it goes nicely alongside pasta too — none of the three dishes felt out of place. If two of you are visiting and want to eat generously, a pasta + pizza combo would work well.

Final verdict on Bueokgan Sangmu Branch in Gwangju

(It was dark so the flash shots came out well haha(o^^o)) Overall the food was satisfying, but what stuck with me most about Bueokgan Sangmu Branch was being able to enjoy the atmosphere of the space right alongside the meal. It has a much clearer concept than your average Western restaurant, so it's great for photos and also great for a slow, chatty meal.

I think this place would especially suit anyone looking for a Sangmu district brunch spot or a Sangmu pasta restaurant with real atmosphere. The menu options are varied too — from the umami-rich shrimp anchovy oil pasta to the smooth rosé pasta and the truffle mushroom pizza — so it works well even if people in your group have different tastes.
