Korean BBQ near Jayang Station: skirt steak and jjolsuni at Donstar

In short

Donstar Charcoal Grill is a Korean BBQ restaurant in Gwangjin, Seoul, a 3-minute walk from Jayang Station. After a walk along the Han River, the writer ordered a serving of whole skirt steak, two servings of pork belly, and jjolsuni (soft tofu stew with chewy noodles), with staff grilling and cutting the meat tableside. The combo of skirt steak and jjolsuni turned this into the writer's new favorite BBQ spot.

Jayang Donstar Charcoal Grill

From the Han River to a BBQ spot near Jayang Station

The weather was so nice I went to the Han River, and then I got a craving for pork belly, so I ended up at Donstar Charcoal Grill near Jayang Station (formerly Ttukseom Resort Station)!

Donstar is just a 3-minute walk from Jayang Station! Perfectly placed for dropping by after hanging out at Ttukseom Han River Park.

The vibe and the private rooms

The interior was clean overall, and there were more tables than I expected.

There were also private rooms! They said the rooms can fit anywhere from 6 to 10 people. It looked like a solid choice for a company dinner or family gathering in Jayang-dong!

Apparently this place uses premium, domestically sourced 1+ grade pork, carefully selected and dry-aged at low temperature for 10 to 15 days. There's a receipt review event too, so join in and get kimchi kalguksu or cold noodles~~! Oh, and wine and whiskey corkage is free 🍷

Basic table setting including shredded green onion and bean sprout pickles

The banchan spread is seriously loaded

The basic table setting was totally my style from the start!! Pickled onions, kimchi, lettuce, shredded green onion, radish wraps, salted shrimp, garlic, ssamjang, salt, and Donstar's special bean sprout pickles. There's also a house sauce made by mixing garlic sauce with steak seasoning. So many things to eat alongside the meat! They even bring out doenjang jjigae as a default side!! Wow, that's real thoughtfulness - ♡

It's not common for a restaurant to serve Coke in an ice-filled cup, right? ㅠㅠ This place has it all figured out.

Whole skirt steak and pre-seared pork belly

Here's what we ordered — whole skirt steak and pork belly! The pork belly came pre-seared once, and it looked mouthwatering just from the visual!!!!

The staff grill the meat for you

And here's another reason I want to recommend Donstar Charcoal Grill... the staff grill the meat for you themselves!!! Here you don't have to worry about the grilling at all, just eat — so convenient 🫶

They cook it until golden brown and cut it into bite-sized pieces. And then the grilled meat goes straight into my mouth...♡

Grilled meat cut into bite-sized pieces

Honestly, even just looking at the meat, I couldn't help myself ㅠㅠ it was seriously insane.

They grill mushrooms alongside too, and those were a real treat!!

The must-order dish: jjolsuni

There's one dish you absolutely have to order at Donstar. Jjolsuni!!! It's soft tofu stew with chewy noodles mixed in, and this one is also seriously insane (in a good way).

Jjolsuni, soft tofu stew with chewy noodles added

They told us to eat the noodles before they get soggy, so we dug in before the meat, and we both let out a gasp of admiration the second we tasted it. It was seriously, seriously delicious. I'd even had soft tofu stew for breakfast that same morning and I completely forgot about it after this... Seriously, trust me and order this... This alone could easily get you through two bowls of rice haha

The best skirt steak I've ever had

I tried each piece of meat, and this was the best skirt steak I've had in my life, no joke. There's a reason skirt steak is their best-seller. The outside gets grilled slightly crispy while the inside stays chewy and still juicy, giving it a great bite — honestly just insane. I didn't expect much from the pork belly either, but it was just as delicious as the skirt steak ㅠㅠ We have a favorite BBQ spot in another neighborhood, and I'd say this place beat it, no contest. I'm officially making this my go-to BBQ spot now. Genuinely amazing,,,,

Endless combos with the sides

Everything you could pair with the meat was delicious. It's good even with just a dip of salt, but my top pick was the shredded green onion, and my friend's top pick was the salted shrimp.

Donstar's special garlic sauce had an exotic, layered flavor too, and even though I normally dislike cucumber pickles, I ended up eating a lot of the bean sprout pickles because they were so refreshing and clean-tasting! Anyway, just piling on the shredded green onion, radish wraps, and salted shrimp all together made everything even better, hehe.

Lettuce wrap topped with shredded green onion and radish wrap

There were so many combinations to try that I barely reached for the lettuce wraps I usually go for ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Even the lettuce wraps need a few different combos, though.

We did the dishes. Cleared the table in no time.

In summary

We ended up here randomly, just wanting BBQ near the river, and it turned out way better than expected — a new go-to BBQ spot discovered 💛 Both the whole skirt steak and the pork belly were among the best I've ever had, and having the staff grill everything perfectly for us made the whole meal effortless! With so many sides to mix and match — shredded green onion, bean sprout pickles, garlic sauce — I never got tired of it all the way to the end haha. And seriously, make sure to order the jjolsuni too...❤️ If you're looking for a great BBQ spot or a company dinner venue near Jayang Station, I can confidently recommend this place. This is officially my new favorite BBQ restaurant now haha. Booking my regular spot at Donstar Charcoal Grill 🤍
