Friday evening, craving grilled meat with a shot of soju, I went looking for Jeonbotdae, a local favorite in Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon!
The moment I walked in, the place was already packed with neighborhood regulars 👥 I could tell right away this was a real hidden gem that locals cherish.
Honestly, I don't usually go for pork belly, but on this visit I discovered its true flavor... From the charcoal-scented meat to the finishing dessert, my visit to Jeonbotdae was perfect. Let me walk you through it!

What the old-school Yongun-dong alley restaurant feels like inside
Jeonbotdae is an old-school grill house tucked into an alley in Yongun-dong. True to its warm name, it greets you with a retro, cozy neighborhood-diner feel.

Maybe because it was Friday, the night before the weekend, the place was buzzing with lively regulars! ✨✨✨

The interior has just the right warm atmosphere for catching up with friends over drinks. The lively air mixed with the charcoal smell got my appetite going the second I walked in .. 👏
The menu at Jeonbotdae Sutbul Ogyeop and what we ordered
At Jeonbotdae you can enjoy both pork and grilled chicken in one visit. I ordered both!

📋 What we ordered 📋
- Premium charcoal pork belly ₩14,000
- Pre-grilled charcoal salt chicken ₩13,000
- Doenjang boss rice ₩4,000

This is the basic table setting! They give you raw laver (gim) to grill yourself, and grilling that up while waiting for the meat turned out to be its own little delicacy.. haha 🫶

The complimentary kimchi pancake and steamed egg showed the owner's generous heart! The kimchi pancake was textbook crispy-outside, soft-inside, and the steamed egg had a smooth, jiggly texture with perfectly balanced seasoning. Both were the perfect appetizer to ease the stomach before the meat arrived.
Premium charcoal pork belly, 14,000 won: pre-grilled and easy to eat
Since it's the signature dish, I ordered two servings of the premium charcoal pork belly first! This menu completely shattered my usual bias against pork belly!!

Because it comes pre-grilled once in the kitchen, you only need to finish it off briefly on the tabletop grill before eating — so convenient 👏

Pork belly with gim (dried seaweed), mayonnaise and pickled chili
On the table at Jeonbotdae there are instructions for grilling laver over the fire and eating it with mayonnaise and pickled chili! I tried this recommended combo and honestly.. no need to say more 🫢 It was genuinely mind-blowing!!

Next I tried wrapping it in lettuce too! Crispy outside, juices bursting inside — the charcoal aroma really brings out the chewiness of the skin and the savoriness of the meat.

It's clean and light without any greasiness, so I'd especially recommend this dish to anyone who's not usually a pork belly fan 💗

Since I was in Daejeon, of course I paired it with a local soju!! Sunyang Rin soju was clean and tasty with no bitterness.

How does the 13,000-won charcoal salt chicken taste?
Jeonbotdae's charcoal salt chicken is a textbook example of clean flavor and smoky charcoal aroma! There's no heavy seasoning, just clean salt, so the chicken's naturally soft, juicy texture really comes through.

It almost looked like it had cheese sprinkled on it.. the meat was so tender and delicious!

It was the perfect clean follow-up after the pork belly ☺️🥢

Finishing with doenjang boss rice, 4,000 won
What put the perfect period on the meal was Jeonbotdae's rich, savory doenjang boss rice. Rice comes ladled right into a bubbling doenjang (soybean paste) stew, washing away all the greasiness left over from the meat!
Thanks to its spicy, deep umami flavor, I scraped the bowl clean down to the last spoonful 😋

We were too full to try it, but there's also a Han River ramyeon (instant noodle) machine that pairs perfectly with the meat — great for a palate cleanser if you're a ramyeon fan!! (sold separately)
Is Jeonbotdae Sutbul Ogyeop worth a visit?
Jeonbotdae, a favorite in Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, wins on solid, no-frills meat and a warm neighborhood vibe! Eating there in person, I completely understood why locals pack the place every Friday evening 🫢💛
Between the effortless quality of the pre-grilled meat and the thoughtful service and dessert, this place fully satisfied — I'll definitely be back whenever I'm craving that charcoal-scented meat again!
