Hyehwa restaurant for a solo oil steak lunch: Omil

In short

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno is a Western-style restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, near Hyehwa Station Exit 4. I had an oil steak and soba maki at a window counter for a late solo lunch; be sure to specify your preferred steak doneness when ordering. Verdict: a relaxed spot for taking your time over a meal alone.

A late solo lunch near Hyehwa Station

Visitor guide for Omil in Daehangno

On Tuesday, lunchtime somehow flew right past, so it looked like I had no choice but to eat alone. So I paid a solo visit to Omil Hyehwa Daehangno (오밀 혜화 대학로) near Hyehwa Station. Omil is close to Exit 4, so it is easy to find. It is on the second floor, though, and the sign is small, so keep your eyes open.

The dining room is not flashy; it is decorated in calm ivory tones.

Rubber Duck Omurice seems to be the signature menu item. OH! MEAL

A solo meal of oil steak and buckwheat gimbap

Oil Steak ₩37,900 and buckwheat gimbap (seaweed rice roll) ₩12,900. Just because I was eating alone does not mean I have to order only one thing, right? I ordered the oil steak as my main and added the buckwheat gimbap. Meat again today.

The oil steak arrived first. It is a flat iron steak. If you do not state a preferred doneness, it arrives almost well-done. I personally like medium-rare, so I made a mistake there. Be sure to tell them your preferred doneness when ordering.

Flat iron oil steak

This is one of Omil's signature dishes, served with a red-wine sauce. It would have been so nice at medium-rare—what a shame.

It comes with fries, too.

This is the buckwheat gimbap. I have had it elsewhere before too, and I like that it is light and clean-tasting.

Buckwheat gimbap

It seems just right for a solo meal.

The steak portion is generous too. Today is steak day!

Generous serving of steak

The end piece of gimbap is always the tastiest, you know.

There is something enjoyable about taking it easy, eating gimbap and steak, and looking out the second-floor window. When ordering steak, be sure to state the doneness you want.

Eating slowly by the window

Omil is a good place for eating alone near Hyehwa Station. The steak and buckwheat gimbap are pleasantly unfussy. A mother and child at the next table were enjoying their meal too. There were young people on dates as well. It is a space anyone, young or old, can enjoy without feeling intimidated. My solo window seat was nice too.
