Spicy sujebi and gyoza dumplings for a spice lightweight: Gangnam

In short

Gangnam Gyoja Bundang Seohyeon Branch is a kalguksu (noodle soup) and dumpling restaurant near Seohyeon Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. Visiting around 1 p.m. to skip the lunch rush, the writer tried the spicy sujebi (hand-torn noodle soup) and gyoza dumplings, finding the chewy dough and spicy broth a great combo that crept up on a self-declared spice lightweight. It's a good pick near Seohyeon Station when you want a warm, filling bowl of soup.

The atmosphere and the best time to visit

The interior overall had a clean, tidy feel, and it seemed like a comfortable space whether you're eating solo or with a group. Since lunch hour tends to get crowded, if you want a more relaxed meal, going a bit early or after 1 p.m. is a good call. I went around 1 p.m. myself, and the atmosphere was noticeably calmer.

Looking at Gangnam Gyoja's menu, there's really a lot to choose from. Quick tip: rice is unlimited from the self-serve bar! Finishing your noodles and then mixing rice into the leftover broth isn't a bad move at all, haha.

Here's what I went with that day.

  • Spicy sujebi
  • Gyoza dumplings

How was the spicy sujebi?

A bowl of spicy sujebi with a fiery broth

"Spicy sujebi" — since I was at a kalguksu specialty spot, I briefly considered ordering the kalguksu, but that day I was somehow more drawn to a spicy broth with chewy sujebi. So I went with the spicy sujebi.

The broth lives up to its name — properly spicy — which made it just right for craving a hot, comforting soup at lunch. I'm a total spice lightweight though, so my first thought was "oh, this is manageable," but as I kept eating, the heat crept up along with a runny nose... 🤣 Still, it was so good I ended up spooning up the broth to the very end!

And with sujebi, the texture of the dough really matters, right? Each spoonful had that chewy bite, plus cute little dumplings mixed in, so the bowl disappeared fast.

Is it worth ordering the gyoza dumplings too?

"Gyoza dumplings" — and since I was at Gangnam Gyoja, I couldn't skip the dumplings. I ordered the gyoza dumplings alongside the sujebi. One bowl of sujebi is already a full meal, but adding a dumpling or two felt like a nice touch.

Gyoza dumplings paired with spicy broth

Picking up a piping hot dumpling and eating it alongside the spicy broth was a great combo. Dumplings paired with a soup dish just make the meal feel a bit more substantial than ordering just one item. If you want sujebi and dumplings together for lunch near Seohyeon Station, this combo is a solid choice :)
