For a lunch near Seohyeon Station, the kalguksu and dumpling combo makes for a hearty Korean meal. The bibimbap here is also great, and Gangnam Gyoja works well for both lunch and dinner in Bundang.

What's on the menu

Since Gangnam Gyoja specializes in kalguksu, there's a wide range of noodle and dumpling dishes — kalguksu, spicy kalguksu, sujebi (hand-torn dough soup), gyoza dumplings — as well as meal options like bibimbap, beef bone rice cake dumpling soup, dakgaejang (spicy chicken soup), seolleongtang (ox bone soup), and Gangnam bossam (boiled pork). The meal menu comes with kalguksu broth on the side, and it's convenient to order by looking at the photos.

Since it's a kalguksu specialist, we ordered the kalguksu. You can choose between spicy and basic flavor. The broth tastes rich, but according to the menu description, it's a light chicken broth base. It comes topped with meat, and the noodles are thin and soft — good with the broth.

Small dumplings inside the kalguksu

There were small dumplings inside the kalguksu too, soft to eat with the noodles, and the meat and onion toppings added nice texture. The noodles aren't thick or the kind that get mushy — the soft bite is what makes them appealing.

The steamed dumplings at Gangnam Gyoja are shaped bite-sized, juicy like dim sum, easy to eat in one bite. They come out in a steamer basket, and were great to pair with the kalguksu.

Gangnam Gyoja bibimbap ₩10,000

Rice is free from the self-serve bar with a kalguksu order, but we saw a photo of the bibimbap and ordered it too. With vegetables and stir-fried meat mixed with gochujang (red chili paste) seasoning and sesame oil aroma, the bibimbap had rich texture and suited my taste well.

I don't eat cucumber or carrot, and it happened to only have the vegetables I do eat, so this bibimbap was extra delicious for me. Ordering bibimbap also comes with broth on the side, so I'd order it again even eating solo.

What about the kimchi?

The kimchi at Gangnam Gyoja has a fairly strong seasoning and is somewhat fermented, but still paired well with the kalguksu. It's served on request — a staff member brings it to your table and portions it out — and it went well with the kalguksu, dumplings, and bibimbap alike.
