Korean restaurant near a waterpark in Namyangju: Onjeongban Shabu

In short

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch is a Korean restaurant in Namyangju, Gyeonggi, serving a 7-course shabu-kalguksu spread for ₩11,000 per person. Stopping by tired after a waterpark trip, the writer ordered the handmade gulrim mandu (rolled dumpling) hot pot for 3 people with clear broth, plus a free gondre-bap (thistle rice) self-serve bar and thrice-daily-tossed geotjeori (fresh kimchi). The gulrim mandu, with skin so thin it's barely noticeable, was the standout dish.

This week I want to introduce Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Namyangju Byeollae Main Branch, a place I visited with my family, dragging my tired body along after a waterpark trip. It was so warm and delicious that I felt bad keeping it to myself!

When the weather turns chilly or you're craving a hot, deep broth, nothing beats shabu-shabu or kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), right? Onjeongban, whose name literally means "a shabu spread full of warmth and care," truly made me feel taken care of, so I wanted to share it with you.

Parking and store atmosphere

Parking is available in front of and beside the restaurant, and there's also a dedicated lot next to the store.

As soon as I stepped inside, the clean and cozy atmosphere made it feel great for a family visit.

There are also baby chairs available inside.

₩11,000 per person set menu, breaking down the menu

Let's take a look at the menu. This place's signature dishes are the 7-course Onjeongban shabu kalguksu and Onjeongban handmade gulrim mandu hot pot. It's a great value too — you get a hearty full spread for just ₩11,000 per person. These days even a basic Korean set meal (baekban) can run over ₩10,000, so ₩11,000 for shabu-shabu kalguksu is genuinely cheap, isn't it?

There are also two special perks unique to this place.

Free gondre-bap self-serve bar

First is the free gondre-bap (thistle rice). It's set up as a self-serve bar, so you can enjoy fragrant gondre-bap as much as you want. Not just plain rice, but unlimited gondre-bap!

On top of that, there's sesame oil, perilla oil, and a special seasoning sauce, so you can drizzle and mix to your taste. Personally, since I love gondre-bap, this service made me really happy.

Geotjeori tossed three times a day

Second is the geotjeori (fresh kimchi) that's tossed fresh three times a day. They never use store-bought geotjeori and remake it three times daily, and maybe that's why it's so crisp and spicy — it pairs beautifully with the kalguksu.

The self-serve bar also has cabbage salad, broth, and various sauces.

In particular, this basic cabbage salad was fresh and crisp without a single browned spot — really tasty.

Handmade gulrim mandu hot pot for 3, with clear broth

My order of the Onjeongban handmade gulrim mandu hot pot for 3 people (clear broth) shabu spread was set on the table.

Seeing the table set generously full, the anticipation built even before I started eating.

Instructions on the table for how to enjoy shabu kalguksu

Before starting to boil, they walk you through how to enjoy the shabu kalguksu, printed at every table.

If you come to Onjeongban, you absolutely must order these handmade gulrim mandu (rolled dumplings)! The skin is so thin you can see the packed filling at a glance, and the flavor is savory and rich, pairing wonderfully with the shabu broth. Since I visited with my child, I chose only the meat dumplings instead of the kimchi gulrim mandu. Ordering 3 servings gets you 9 dumplings total, and the portion is more generous than you'd expect.

Starting with vegetables and shabu meat

First, they added mushrooms and various vegetables that felt fresh, along with vivid red shabu meat, into the broth to simmer.

As the broth started boiling, I fished out the vegetables first, and the crisp bite of mushrooms and vegetables spread a natural sweetness through my mouth.

As the vegetable stock slowly steeped into the clear, clean broth, it began to develop a deep flavor.

Lightly blanched shabu meat

Next, I tried a bite of the lightly blanched shabu meat, and it was so tender and softly savory that it seemed to melt in my mouth.

Especially when dipped lightly in the restaurant's special sauce, it cut through any greasiness while doubling the umami, and I couldn't stop reaching for more with my chopsticks. Thanks to the clean yet deep shabu broth, my stomach felt comfortable and warmly satisfied.

Gulrim mandu with skin so thin you barely notice it

Once the vegetables and meat were sufficiently cooked, they added the gulrim mandu as well.

Usually, when dumpling skin is thick, it masks the flavor of the filling or tastes too floury, quickly leaving you feeling bloated. But this place's gulrim mandu has skin so thin it's barely noticeable, with the filling packed full.

When I bit in, the meat and vegetables in the filling had a wonderfully lively, granular texture. The soft outside and springy inside of this handmade gulrim mandu's texture made it taste even better with the broth.

Dipping the gulrim mandu lightly into the savory, rich broth warmed me from the inside out, with the nutty flavor spreading through my whole body. If you love dumplings, you can't help but fall for this texture and taste! If you want more while eating, you can add 8 gulrim mandu for ₩7,000. Personally, even one serving felt filling enough that I didn't need to add more.

Kalguksu noodles and finishing porridge

After enjoying the fresh vegetables and meat as shabu-shabu first, there's a fun part where you add the springy kalguksu noodles and boil them. Topping the noodles with the fresh geotjeori tossed three times a day gives you the magic of eating more even when you're already full.

To finish, making a hearty porridge completes the full 7-course spread. The portion was so generous I understood right away why this place is famous as a great-value Byeollae restaurant. After eating so heartily, I suddenly thought of my parents. I plan to visit again with them next time.

What's at the dessert corner?

Coming out after the meal, I noticed the dessert corner was really neatly set up. On one side there was a ppeongtwigi (puffed rice snack) corner, where you could scoop as much as you wanted into a paper cup — a small delight. I also liked that tongs were provided for hygienic serving. It was crispy and nutty, perfect for cleansing the palate after the meal.

There were also slushies kids would love, available in papaya and mango flavors. Note that the slushies can't be brought inside the restaurant — they're only for takeaway as you leave.

Papaya and mango slushie machines

There was also a fragrant coffee machine, great for finishing off cleanly with an Americano. From the main meal to the dessert, everything felt thoughtfully done, and I finished the meal very satisfied.

I tried this bori-gangjeong (barley candy), and it was sweet and really delicious. After thoroughly finishing off dessert too, I felt like I was about to burst.

Onjeongban Shabu Kalguksu Byeollae Main Branch, in summary
