Kid-friendly Jinju restaurant with galbitang and naengmyeon: Songgiwon

It's been getting warmer lately and I keep craving cold noodles haha. This time I went with my kids to Jinju and stopped by Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon. Turns out it was featured on Jeon Hyun-moo's Plan 2 Jinju episode, so I'd been curious about it for a while and finally got to visit myself haha.

Besides naengmyeon, they also have galbitang, so I figured it'd be a good spot to eat with the kids too. If you're looking for a family-friendly restaurant in Jinju, this could be a good option haha.

Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store: hours and location

Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store is located in Jinju, Gyeongnam. It's open daily from 10:30 to 20:00, with a break time from 16:00 to 17:00. It's a well-known spot for naengmyeon in Jinju, and we went for lunch with the kids.

Parking at Songgiwon: a Jinju restaurant with a wide lot

The parking lot at Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store is right next to the restaurant, and it's much bigger than I expected, which was really convenient. During busy hours, there's even parking staff on hand.

When you're out with kids, easy parking matters more than you'd think haha.

Inside Songgiwon: a dining room styled like a pottery atelier

Walking into Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon, the atmosphere felt a bit different from a typical naengmyeon restaurant.

Pottery and paintings are displayed here and there, and the lighting and decor suit the space well.

Overall it was a calm space that was also fun to look around. Side dishes, small plates, and utensils are self-serve — just take what you need from the self-serve bar.

Since we had the kids with us, we sat at a table a bit further inside.

What do the menu names Sunjo, Nongae, Songgiwon and Dongilgae mean?

True to a Jinju naengmyeon specialty restaurant, the menu was simpler than I expected — mul-naengmyeon, bibim-naengmyeon, mul-bibim-naengmyeon, galbitang, and a side dish of ujeon (grilled beef). But the menu names were a bit unusual haha.

• Mul-naengmyeon is called Sunjo
• Bibim-naengmyeon is called Nongae
• Mul-bibim-naengmyeon is called Songgiwon
• Galbitang is called Dongilgae

Since we came with the kids, we ordered: ✔ mul-naengmyeon (Sunjo) ✔ mul-bibim-naengmyeon (Songgiwon) ✔ galbitang (Dongilgae) ✔ ujeon.

This is the mul-bibim-naengmyeon my husband ordered. It was piled high with ujeon on top, so it looked quite hearty.

Eating the noodles together with ujeon, it felt like a satisfying meal on its own. You mix in mustard and vinegar and stir it all together.

Mul-naengmyeon (Sunjo): clean, cold broth the kids could finish

I wanted something clean and refreshing, so I ordered the mul-naengmyeon today.

A bowl of cool naengmyeon was just right for the hot weather haha.

There was a good amount of thick-cut meat in it, so it was more filling than I expected. Eating it together with the side dishes made the whole meal feel even more substantial.

Galbitang (Dongilgae): better than expected, with egg like jidan

Personally, the galbitang at Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon turned out to be better than I expected.

The meat was very large and hearty, making it easy to share with the kids.

What stood out most was the egg — instead of being scattered through the soup, it was layered in like jidan (egg garnish). My second child, who doesn't usually eat egg, ate this without any trouble.

When eating with kids, it seems like a good idea to order a dish like galbitang alongside naengmyeon, for kids who aren't big fans of cold noodles!

Ujeon (pan-fried beef), cut thick

The meat came grilled thick, about two hearty slices, and it paired well with both the naengmyeon and the galbitang.

Eating with the kids, we ended up sharing little bits of everything haha.

If we'd only ordered naengmyeon, it might have felt a bit lacking, but with the galbitang and grilled beef too, it felt like a solid, filling meal for the whole family.

And of course, dipping it in the sauce that came with it made it even tastier.

Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store lets you order not just naengmyeon but also galbitang and grilled beef together, which made it work well for a family meal. What was especially convenient for us was being able to satisfy the kids' preferences while still getting to try Jinju's famous naengmyeon haha.
