Raw beef and solo soju in Bokhyeon-ogeori, Daegu: Bonghwa Saenggogi

In short

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch is a mungtigi (Korean raw beef) restaurant at Bokhyeon-ogeori in Buk-gu, Daegu. After work the writer ordered the raw beef big plate (270g) with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and a bowl of rice: the beef was so firm and fresh it stayed put even when the plate was turned upside down, and the free side dishes alone were enough to finish a bottle of soju. For a no-fail drinking snack near Bokhyeon-ogeori, Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch is the answer.

Today, to blow off some work stress, I headed to Bokhyeon-ogeori in Daegu for the mungtigi (raw beef) I'd been craving for ages. Daegu means mungtigi, right? There are tons of bars and restaurants around Bokhyeon-dong, but when you actually think "I want really good raw beef today!" surprisingly few places come to mind. After some searching, I found this place: Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch. Spoiler: 200% would go back again!

Where is Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch and when is it open?

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch is at 16 Gyeongjin-ro 1-gil, Buk-gu, Daegu, near Bokhyeon-ogeori. It's open daily from 17:00 to 01:00, closed every Sunday. Note that it closes early when ingredients run out, so keep that in mind if you're heading over late.

What is the restaurant like inside?

The moment you step into Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch, you get that warm, nostalgic pojangmacha (street tent bar) vibe. The place is spotlessly clean, and the owner greeted me with such a friendly smile that I felt good the instant I walked in.

It's a cozy little space, perfect for a light soju after dragging your tired body home from work.

Table seating good for a soju drink

There's also an unlimited fried-egg self bar. Talk about generosity from the owner!

How many free side dishes do you get?

Bonghwa Saenggogi Bokhyeon Branch's basic side dishes are generous and clearly made with care. The truly touching part is that the table was already full of neatly arranged bowls before the meat even arrived.

Neatly arranged basic side dish spread

Side dishes including peanuts and macaroni salad
Side dishes of cucumber and gim

Savory peanuts, mayo macaroni salad, and refreshing cucumber and gim (seaweed) made for fun bite-by-bite snacking.

Pink sausage pancake, cabbage pancake, and tteokbokki in broth

Nostalgic pink sausage pancake, nicely browned cabbage pancake, and chewy tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cakes) in broth also showed up, and they were exactly my taste. On top of that, super-fresh cheonyeop (beef tripe) and salted pollack roe... the side dishes alone looked ready to finish off a bottle of soju!

Beef radish soup served in an earthenware pot

The warm, refreshing beef radish soup served bubbling in an earthenware pot was perfect to sip between bites of meat, resetting my palate.

Raw beef big plate (270g): firm enough to stay on an upside-down plate

A plate of deep reddish-black mungtigi
Same-day butchered hanwoo rump raw beef

Finally, the star of the show, mungtigi, arrived! The second I saw the color of the meat, I let out a "wow..." You could see the freshness in that deep reddish-black color just by looking.

You know the thing everyone does when they get mungtigi? Tilt the plate 90 degrees, then flip it a full 180! Since they only use same-day butchered fresh hanwoo rump, the stickiness was no joke. I flipped the plate and not a single piece fell — it stayed completely stuck. So wild.

Mungtigi staying stuck to the plate even flipped upside down

The tendons and rough bits were trimmed so meticulously that there was nothing to catch on while chewing — it melted right in your mouth. Chewy yet fresh, with a subtle savory sweetness from the meat itself spreading with every bite.

Why the dipping sauce is the real cheat code

Honestly, it's not an exaggeration to say half of raw beef's flavor comes down to the dipping sauce, right? Bonghwa Saenggogi's sauce is an absolute cheat code. It's a mildly spicy minced sauce loaded with coarsely crushed garlic and plenty of fragrant sesame oil.

Dip a piece of mungtigi in the sauce, top it with a bit of garlic and chili, and pop it in your mouth in one bite... the chewy texture of the meat mixed with the spicy, savory sauce is a flavor that calls for soju!

Doenjang jjigae for 4,000 won and doenjang sulbap to finish

The doenjang jjigae is just ₩4,000, but the portion is huge — and it even has beef in it. That price makes no sense.

Doenjang sulbap eaten as a finishing dish

Finishing it off with doenjang sulbap (rice mixed into the stew) makes it perfect, doesn't it? This place truly makes drinks call for more drinks.
