Aewol dongchimi bibim noodles vs pork noodle soup: Handam Guksu, Jeju
In short
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a pork noodle (gogi-guksu) restaurant at 33 Aewol-ro in Aewol-eup, Jeju, on the main road beside Handam Beach. Ordering the bone broth pork noodles and the dongchimi bibim noodles together at 10,000 won each showed the difference between the soft sliced pork topping and the finely shredded lean meat, and the bibim noodles tasted far better once a generous pour of dongchimi brine was mixed in. Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is worth recommending for a filling lunch in Aewol.

Aewol pork noodle spot Lunch favorite

Just like gukbap is Korean soul food, pork noodles (gogi guksu) give off that same comforting vibe in Jeju. I was craving a bowl, so while making my way toward Aewol I stopped by Handam Guksu, a local pork noodle favorite that apparently draws plenty of locals too.

Where is Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch, and where do you park?
🚗 Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch sits on the busy main road near Handam Beach. There's parking right in front, and if that's full, you can use the Landy's Donuts lot or the Handam Trail lot instead — both offer 1 hour of free parking, which was really handy.

Being able to see the beach through the window made the meal taste even better — like an ocean-view lunch bonus. I bet you can catch a sunset from here in the evening too. Seeing plenty of local cars besides rentals confirmed this really is a local favorite.

Even at seats without a direct ocean view, the floor-to-ceiling windows let the sunny weather pour in, keeping the mood bright. There are baby chairs too, so it's easy to bring kids along.

Handam Guksu menu and side dishes
As a proper pork noodle restaurant, Handam Guksu focuses on gogi guksu. There's bone broth pork noodles, dongchimi bibim noodles, mala pork noodles, and lean meat gukbap, so you can pick based on your taste. Mala pork noodles was a fun surprise!

Pairing your meal with dombe naengsuyuk (cold sliced pork), handmade pork tteokgalbi, or pork mandu would make it even better. These sides go well with both the broth and the bibim sauce.

Bone broth pork noodles (₩10,000) Dongchimi bibim noodles (₩10,000)

Bone broth pork noodles, 10,000 won: the broth and the noodles
This is the most basic menu item, bone broth pork noodles. The standout feature is a clean, cozy bone broth. It even had bean sprouts in it, adding a refreshing edge.

A great hangover-cure meal if you had a drink the night before! The regular portion is already generous, so the large size must be huge. If you like mixing rice into broth, order a separate bowl of rice after finishing the noodles and mix it into the leftover broth.

The broth, simmered for a long time, tasted clean and delicious. They mentioned it's already seasoned, but the level was moderate, so you can add salt and pepper to taste.

The noodles were bouncy, the meat tender — a comforting bone broth pork noodle that's easy on kids too. The broth flavor kept me coming back for more spoonfuls all the way to the end.

Dongchimi bibim noodles: how much dongchimi brine should you pour in?
Curious, I also tried the bibim pork noodles. The bibim version comes with cucumber alongside the bean sprouts, and the meat is shredded into thin pieces — a generous portion overall.

For bibim dishes, the sauce matters most, and this one was a spicy sauce with a hint of fruity sweetness — really tasty.

The bibim noodles use thin noodles like somyeon. There was so much of it that mixing the sauce in took a while, haha.

But pouring in dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth makes everything moist and much quicker to mix. I first tried mixing with just a little broth, then added enough that the bottom of the bowl got fairly soggy — and it was definitely tastier with more dongchimi. They serve the dongchimi separately, so you can adjust to your taste. It's delicious even just spooned up plain! The portion is generous, so you can pour some over the noodles and still have extra to sip on its own.

Sliced pork topping vs shredded lean meat: how the two bowls differ
The meat in the bone broth pork noodles has a bit of fat and is sliced thin, giving it a very soft texture, while the meat in the bibim pork noodles is lean, shredded meat that can feel slightly drier — but it actually suited the bibim noodles well.

Above all, I loved how generous the meat portion was! The seasoning wasn't too strong, but it was still craveable. And no dry mouthfeel afterward! Handam Guksu stands out for offering both broth and bibim noodles, plus using bean sprouts in the pork noodles.

Why Handam Guksu is worth it for lunch in Aewol
Usually noodle dishes leave me hungry again soon after, but maybe because both the noodles and meat were so generous here, I stayed full for a long time. A memorable pork noodle spot in Aewol! If you want a satisfying lunch in Aewol, head to Handam Guksu for pork noodles. Eating here then walking the Handam Beach trail afterward makes for a perfect route.
