In short
Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch is a pork noodle (gogi-guksu) restaurant near Handam Beach and the Aewol café street in Jeju. Arriving at 11:05-11:10am meant no wait, and the order was bone broth pork noodles, mala pork noodles and pork tteokgalbi (grilled minced pork patty), with the mala bowl only about as spicy as Shin Ramyun. Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch: pork noodles near Handam Beach in Aewol
Aewol's Handam Beach and its café street are probably familiar to anyone traveling around western Jeju. It's such a famous tourist spot that you see a lot of foreign visitors — when I went, there were especially many Chinese tourists.
This time I came here for gogi guksu (pork noodle soup) haha. You order at a kiosk. We ordered bone broth pork noodles, mala pork noodles, and pork tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patty).
Even though it's right in the middle of a tourist area, the menu prices weren't too heavy, so it seemed like a good spot for a light meal while sightseeing around Handam Beach :)

🥢 Side dishes at Handam Guksu are self-serve
At Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch you grab your own basic side dishes from a self-serve bar. There was kimchi, dried radish, and chili peppers. The peppers looked spicy so I passed haha.
I checked the country-of-origin labels too, and aside from the chili powder in the napa cabbage kimchi, most things were labeled as domestic Korean.
Before I moved to Jeju, I had no idea chili powder was this expensive. My mom always kept me stocked so I never really looked at the price haha. Now that I'm far from my hometown... I miss those days when a visit home meant coming back with an armful of ingredients. Seeing the price of chili powder makes me think of my mom for no reason...

⏰ Arriving just after 11am meant no wait
We arrived at Handam Guksu Gwakji Aewol Branch between 11:05 and 11:10am and got in right away with no wait. When I went, there were tons of Korea Maritime and Ocean University students there. I'm not sure if it was a practicum or a group trip, but the restaurant was almost full of students haha.
Nice, still fine since it's right after opening~
...I thought, but not long after we sat down, people started lining up outside to wait. Glad we came early haha.
🚗 Where to park at Handam Guksu
There is parking space in front of the restaurant. From what I saw, if you pack the cars in tightly with double parking, you could fit around 6 cars. But there aren't many spots, so parking could get tight during busy hours.

🍜 What we ordered at Handam Guksu
What we ordered was
- Bone broth pork noodles
- Mala pork noodles
- Pork tteokgalbi
That's it! We ordered around 11:10am and the food came out around 11:22am. Waited a bit over 10 minutes haha.

🍜 Bone broth pork noodles: close to textbook Jeju gogi-guksu
My husband ordered the bone broth pork noodles. After one bite he said
This is like the textbook version of gogi guksu, right?
haha.

The broth is really clear. Even in photos you can tell it's not cloudy at all — a clean style, and the flavor was easy and comfortable to eat.
Other gogi guksu places I've had before tended to be richer, with more of a homemade, heavy-handed flavor, while Handam Guksu felt more refined and clean. If you prefer a clean broth over a rich, heavy one, this would suit you well. It also seemed like an easy first gogi guksu for anyone trying it for the first time in Jeju :)

🌶 How spicy are the mala pork noodles? Milder than expected
I got the mala pork noodles! I really like mala tang haha. Especially at Tanghwa Kungfu, I usually order level 2. Comparing by that standard, Handam Guksu's mala pork noodles felt like about level 1.5 — not very intensely spicy.
If I have to compare it to a spice level people know, I'd say it was about as spicy as Shin Ramyun. Also the aroma and kick were a bit softer than a typical mala tang, so it should work well for people who like mala but find the strongest versions too much.
While eating, I thought
I could come here whenever I'm craving mala tang.
haha. You can taste the mala flavor, but maybe because it's noodle soup, it feels a bit easier to eat!

🥩 Eat the noodles with the pork, then with the chives
Eating the meat and noodles inside the soup together, then adding chives on top — mixing up the combination bite by bite was fun haha. I like eating all sorts of toppings together like this, so it worked for me. Eating the meat and chives together in the mala broth definitely brought out more flavor.

🐷 Pork tteokgalbi is the dish to order at Handam Guksu
And then... the pork tteokgalbi! Honestly at first I thought of it as just a side dish. But one bite in and my eyes lit up haha.
It's not an especially thick style, but the inside was juicy, so it was way better than I expected. It was labeled as handmade pork tteokgalbi, and it was great to eat bite by bite alongside the gogi guksu. Of everything I ate that day, the tteokgalbi stuck with me the most haha.

😋 A very good meal at Handam Guksu
The bone broth pork noodles were clean and easy, the mala pork noodles had that mala aroma but with less of a kick, and the pork tteokgalbi was genuinely delicious. Ordering different dishes and trading bites with each other was fun too haha. If you're coming with someone who loves mala like me and someone who prefers a basic gogi guksu, this place is great for splitting the menu!

👀 The waitlist had started by the time we left
We finished our meal and left around 11:46am, and by then the restaurant was almost completely full, with people waiting outside too.
Since we'd gotten in right after opening, I thought
If we'd come just a little later, we'd have had to wait...
haha. If you want to eat without rushing, visiting a bit earlier like we did seems like a good idea.

🌊 A walk on Handam Beach after the noodles
After eating, we headed straight to nearby Handam Beach. The waves were a bit strong that day, which actually made the ocean more fun to watch haha. Having a filling bowl of gogi guksu and then walking around Handam Beach makes for a good route. It also connects nicely into a walk around the Aewol café street :)
✅ Yomangjin pick: is Handam Guksu worth it?
A convenient spot to stop by for gogi guksu near Handam Beach! My husband's bone broth pork noodles were a clean, textbook style, and my mala pork noodles kept the mala aroma without being too intense, making them easy to eat.
And the unexpected top pick was... the pork tteokgalbi haha. Don't just order noodles — get a tteokgalbi to share too. We'd love to come back again next time we're craving mala :)
Yomangjin pick ✓ A great spot before or after a walk at Handam Beach, for clean gogi guksu, mild mala pork noodles, and pork tteokgalbi!!
