Is there a wait at 1pm on a weekday? Inside Banwoldang Bujasikdang

Sophia's couple visited Banwoldang Bujasikdang around 1pm on a weekday, and I was honestly surprised to see the place packed with customers. A little later and we might have had to wait! Turns out it's known as a genuine local favorite where waiting is basically a given, but we got lucky and were seated right away^^

For neighbors who don't want to wait, I'd definitely recommend making a reservation before visiting. Once inside, there were plenty of tables ready. There's also an inner room that would be great for gatherings. You know how a place packed with moms is always the real deal? Sure enough, discerning older diners were happily eating away.

Looking around the walls, they were covered in autographs from celebrities. It gave me that 'yep, I found the right place' feeling, and my expectations shot up before I'd even eaten a bite. We sat down and ordered right away.

Cheonggukjang stew and unlimited banchan refills

Banwoldang Bujasikdang's cheonggukjang (fermented soybean stew) was not overpowering at all — clean, nutty, and honestly the best.

The neat, homey banchan (side dishes), full of mom's-hand flavor, come with unlimited refills.

Neatly arranged basic side dishes

Not long after ordering, a table full of neat side dishes arrived, and since the owner makes them all by hand, you could taste the care in every single one. The seasoning was spot on, and it had that comforting, home-cooked feeling.

The signature dish: stone-grilled short rib for two

Finally, the main dish, stone-grilled rib, arrived! It came out sizzling on a piping hot stone plate, and both the look and the smell were completely amazing.

Sweet-savory with a hint of smoky char, the stone-grilled rib had meat that was tender, never dry — an absolute rice thief.

Lettuce wrap with stone-grilled rib and garlic

The seasoning soaked right into the meat, so it was delicious on its own, but wrapping it in lettuce with a slice of garlic was truly something to marvel at. Paired with the homemade side dishes, it went so well that I emptied a whole bowl of rice in no time.

Full meal spread with two servings of stone-grilled rib and side dishes

The meat quality was excellent, and serving it on a hot stone plate meant it stayed warm the whole meal, which I loved. Even at two servings, the portion was generous enough to satisfy big eaters. From the friendly alley atmosphere to the carefully made side dishes and the star stone-grilled rib, nothing was missing. Eating it myself, I completely understood why the place is packed even on weekday lunches and why celebrities come here.

Fried burdock, the side dish worth taking home

Among the basic side dishes, one was a real standout — the 'fried burdock'! At first I assumed it was just regular braised burdock, but one bite in, it was crispy and sweet, tasting exactly like sweet-and-spicy fried chicken.

It was so delicious that I asked about it, and sure enough, it's a popular item you can buy separately too! Once you visit, you'll definitely end up refilling this fried burdock a few times. I bought a pack to take home. (Free refills available)
