In short

Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch is a Hamhung-style cold noodle and old-style bulgogi restaurant on 419 Café Street, next to the 4.19 National Cemetery in Gangbuk, Seoul. On a weekday lunch visit the table shared mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth) at 12,000 won, seokkeo naengmyeon (mixed cold noodles) at 14,000 won, wang galbitang (short rib soup) at 17,000 won and wang mandu (big dumplings) at 6,000 won. Iseol Myeonok Suyu Main Branch sits on 419 Café Street right beside 4.19 National Cemetery Park. I love Hamhung-style naengmyeon, so while hunting for a good cold noodle spot I found Iseol Myeonok and decided to check it out. It's a great stop either after hiking Bukhansan or for a meal before heading up — even on a weekday lunch, the place was pretty packed.

Mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth), 12,000 won

Bowl of mul naengmyeon topped with egg and garnish

The mul naengmyeon comes in a clean, refreshing broth topped with egg and garnish. It's clean and delicious enough to represent what a great Hamhung naengmyeon restaurant should taste like. If you love naengmyeon, this is a must-visit!

Seokkeo naengmyeon glistening with bibim sauce

Seokkeo naengmyeon, 14,000 won: hoe and bibim naengmyeon in one bowl

Seokkeo naengmyeon combines hoe naengmyeon (raw fish cold noodles) and bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles) in a single bowl. I was torn between ordering hoe naengmyeon or bibim naengmyeon, so I went with the mixed version instead. I loved that there was plenty of the glossy bibim sauce, so I got to enjoy that shiny, well-coated bibim naengmyeon flavor too. Confirmed naengmyeon spot!

Wang galbitang with three pieces of short rib

Wang galbitang (short rib soup), 17,000 won

The wang galbitang arrives in a hot bowl, still bubbling away. There were three whole rib pieces in it! With glass noodles and vegetables mixed in, it's great to eat together. Add a bowl of rice and mix it in, and the whole thing disappears in no time!

Wang mandu (big dumplings), 6,000 won

Wang mandu served with dipping sauce at Iseol Myeonok

The wang mandu (dumplings) are great dipped in the sauce for extra savory flavor. The wrapper is thin and soft, which makes me think they're handmade.

Is Iseol Myeonok worth the price?

Naengmyeon is one of those menus that's great when you want a light, easy meal, right? But it's disappointing when the naengmyeon you order just isn't very good. At Iseol Myeonok, you're guaranteed a genuinely tasty bowl. Next time you're craving good naengmyeon, remember Iseol Myeonok :p
